Does anyone actually do this? In the owners manuel it says to let it run for 30 seconds before driving and 2-3 minutes after driving before shut off. I let it run 30 seconds this morning and was surprised to hear the change in sound.

I warm up 1 minute in the morning at startup (the exhaust note usually changes after about 30-45 seconds) and about a minute to cool down in the evening. I warm up more in cold weather but not much since it is garaged.

 

Same here, warm up in the morning for approx. 30 sec to 1 min. But I just shut off the engine without cooling it down. Does anyone know if we should cool the engine befor shutoff?

 

i always warm up the car for at least a minute or two until the needle is to the bottom line. however, i see no reason to, or even believe an idling car will cool down...especially in summer heat.

unless you have fi or have just run the car hard, i see no need to cool down.

 

I usually only warm up the engine for how ever long it takes me to buckle up and turn off the auto dim rear view mirror. As long as you don't floor the car and drive normally, I don't think it's necessary to warm up the car. It just wastes gas! Thank you San Diego weather!

 

I wait for the exhuast note to quiet down and for the idle rpms to drop to normal.

cool down sounds like TURBO TIMER on cars with Remote Start installed.... i've heard of that with cars with FI obvs, but not NA

 

^^It's pretty important if your gonna drive it hard. It's actually not even recommended to take the car past 4k I believe, before it's fully warmed up.

 

I deals with large diesel engines. Cool down is more important than warm up for them. Particularly if they have been running at highway speeds for a while. I'm not certain if it's as important for our cars, but I know that it can't hurt.

 

It's a waste of gas to warm and cool without moving. Depending on your routine, I'm plenty warm by the time I leave the subdivision and long before I get on the highway. Cool down is similar in reverse, like a cool down lap at a track day. The last mile or so before my destination is lightly driven. And cooldown in a NA car isn't even necessary and only recommended on FI if it's driven hard. Either way, it's hurts nothing to be moving during warm up and at least you're not getting 0mpg.

 

i let my car warm up for like 1 minute or when it gets around 1k rpm. when i finish driving, i just pop my hood and let all that hot **** air escape the engine bay. do not know if it works but ive been doing that ever since i have the car.
