Alright, I work at a dealer, so flame away. We sell $200k+ cars. Anyway, in Texas, when you purchase your car you get a paper temporary tag. The state issues a plate to you once the dealership acct. department sends the paperwork. Usually takes about three weeks. To make it more confusing, the state is now reusing old plates. So if you want to keep your plate, you put it on the new car, under the temporary tag, until the state issues your registration, and then you take the paper tag off.

Different states have different rules. I bet you had a temporary plate on your car that the dealership gave you when you bought the car. I think some states don't allow temp tags so you have to have the permanent ones. Some states allow you to get the tags really quick whereas other states take a couple months before you can get them.

Hawaii - took 9 days for the plates to arrive at the dealership; heard of many folks taking longer to get them. Temporary plates/registration until they arrive....

For California, you know the 1 number, 3 letter, 3 number sequence...I wonder what will happen once someone receives a 9ZZZ999 plate in the future...we're bound to hit that in a couple decades or so...haha random thought...

By then, the roads will be so congested that you won't be able to drive your car anyway.

I didn't have to wait at all, up here in Manitoba, Canada you can just transfer the plate from your old car the same day. Or if this is your first plate, you can get it the same day too. The insurance companies stockpile a bunch of them behind the counter so they can assign them immediately.

If you are getting a vanity plate like I have, then it takes a few months from the time you order it and you get to use a normal plate until the vanity plate arrives.
