You don't need build credit by buying a car, just get a credit card and don't overspend

I'll be honest I am 23 and only have been out of college for a year. I make just shy of 41k a year between my job and a sidehobby weekend job I run from home. Not much money but in a cheap state like Michigan where livin' is pretty thrifty it does go a long way. I would adjust it to about 52k worth in NY/Cali. But, anyhow, the reason I got a G is because I plan on living with my parents until I am 25-26 and ready to marry. Indians here may understand that it's not uncommon for Indian parents to not mind "holding onto" their kids for longer than typical American parents, there's typically no dishonor in staying with the family until just shy of marriage. I don't mind that - I do a lotta handy-man stuff around the house and help my parents with a lot. I'm kind of the glue of the family.

But I'll admit that the only reason I can afford my G is because they give me my bedroom, furniture, TV/DVD, etc., shelter, utilities and hot meals at my leisure which is great and I'm thankful for it. That's why I'd rather get my baby G now and pay her off swiftly when the payments are easy to pull off rather than scrape ends to pay one off when I have a nagging wife, home, kids, misc bills, etc.

I presume not many owners are in my same situation here and that's cool.

haha wow, i see flames everywhere today (buying/leasing subforum). anyway, im 24 and i'm living with my parents right now, but i think i have the right reasons for doing so. i graduated from college 2.5 years ago and have a good paying job that's 15 minutes away from home. i definitely don't plan on living there for a long time, but for now, it's the most financially sound thing to do (unless someone can prove to me otherwise). so instead of blowing money on rent, i decided to put it towards a car (yeah yeah, depreciating investment, but at least it's not a total loss like rent).

There's a simple reason I got this car. Life is too short, you never know what the next day may or may not bring. I don't want to live my life with regrets (I'm sure all of you have experienced this to a certain extent). This may not be my "dream car" (carrera GT...haha i don't think that's happening), but it certainly comes very close, and it's one thing i can check off my list of things i want to do in my life. I think this is the only point in my life when I'll REALLY want a nice sports luxury coupe, and I know it becomes much less realistic when you settle down with a wife, kids, and a house. By then, I'll be perfectly happy driving a family sedan or something along those lines.

Anyway, if this car is within your means to reasonably afford, then I won't argue with you. I've seen sushi chefs driving M3's since that's been their dream car since they were little. If this is what you truly want and you're willing to work hard for it, then you deserve it. Period.

**EDIT** Just saw your post Joe. We're in the same boat.

It's funny how we all argue and tell each other how much they had to suffer to buy their car.

Glad to see people doing the same and living at home rather than paying rent as well and saving money, say what you want guys but its probably the best financial position you could be in for a while living with your parents.

jchen ive been taking 15-16 credits per semester thats about an average of 5 classes a semester give or take one and I attend summer classes and did one winter one this year as well.

who cares. just drive the G hard and enjoy it. watch your corners and what you say in these forums while keeping in mind that sarcasm doesnt always translate via text as it would otherwise.

no one cares about your situation. just post pics of your car and leave the silver spoon out of the convo.

I am a married female who has no kids. I LOVE THE G! I agree with a past post...why buy a BMW, Benz etc. when you dont get as much bang for your buck? Its smart shopping I think for anybody to own a G. It shows you did your homework in my opinion. Dont get me wrong, if I could buy a $60K--$100K car I would most definetly look at the BMW or Benz etc, but that is b/cuz Infiniti doesnt sell a car in those price ranges.

We just bought a 2008 Cadillac Escalade SUV (fully loaded) and its funny b/cuz I swear my little 2008 G has several options the Caddy doesnt and it cost $20K more. Gives me warm fuzzies inside... I like my navigation system much better than Caddy thats for sure.

I am also hoping they do make it in convertible at some point. Since this is my 2nd G I will most likely look for something else when my lease is up just to drive something totally different. But who knows.

p.s. there is nothing wrong with living at home and going to school. But you have to be realistic about life as well. I had a silver spoon in my mouth growing up, but I think that driving a $45K car at my age is an accomplishment. Did I mention I dont work? Thanks hubby!

credit cards only build small lines of credit. A bank is not going to give you $300k if you only had a credit card that you put a couple hundred a month on. You need to start building high end credit, and the only way to do that is to get a line of credit out for something expensive.
