My Gen 2 Coupe Analysis.
I agree 100%!
Your analysis could not be any better! I agree with you 100%, well almost. I dont agree that the interior looks similiar to the concept. In fact it looks totally diff. than the concept. It looks very similiar to the 07 Sedan. Over all I would give the car no more than a 7, and 7's pushing it actually. Indeed the 07 Sedan this time around looks much sexier.

All the sexiness the current G possesses is gone. Here's my analysis, not that anyone cares, and perhaps my negativity will 'make more sense':

The Front
The swooping front fascia looks NOTHING like the concept. Headlights look GREAT, much better than the current headlights, but thats where it ends. I agree with the SC430ish statement made by a few members. I feel that the elongated trapezoidal bumper ducts are a signature G design element. That is gone now. The grill is okay, but I feel the current grill is a bit nicer.

The Side
They managed to keep the voluptuous roof line our cars have, which is a good thing. This I would say is another signature G design element. From the side, it still maintains a nice profile, but those ugly lower valence indentations (both on the concept and production car) are very out of place. At least they toned the indentations down a bit for the production version. They have no flow with the rest of the side, and looks like an afterthought. Wheels look pretty cool, but lack the sportiness the oem 18" and 19" wheels had.

The Rear
This is where I feel the most harm was done. The tail lights kind of resemble the current ones, but I think they are just a bit too big. The concept's tail lights were a pretty good size. Good thing to see they kept the dual LED rings on the tail lights for the production version. The concept had the nice integrated exhaust, but I knew that wasn't going to make it into the production version. Instead they chose to go with a simple rear valence, which in my opinion does the job. I can say that it is my favorite part of the rear. Now, on to that eyesore that is the chrome "bubble" on the edge of the rear deck lid. I think that is such a bad call from the design department. Even on the sedan, that thing just looks out of place. When you order the sport package (on the sedan) the wing just sits on top of that 'goiter'. I assume the coupe will be the same. Oval exhaust looks nice, flows nicely with the rear valance.

The Interior
WOW! The interior looks GREAT! They managed to keep it looking like the concept's interior like 80%. Love the waterfall center console, and the more adjustable seats. I wish that they had mush this much attention to the exterior though.
Conclusion
Having gone to design school and earning a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design, a have a different perspective on most things. I have a pretty good sense of style, and can usually point out good design. All I can say is that I am glad I purchased the my G the year I did. I have a feeling that the mechanical side of things on the new G is where it shines. The growl of the new VQ must be amazing, with its dual intakes. The interior design is a work of art, but doesn't make up for the lack of exterior design. Unfortunately, on a scale from 1-10, I give the new G an 5.5, whereas the current G gets a 8.5. I know that there will be many people angry over this analysis, but hey, we all have opinions, and I will stick by mine. I can honestly say that the Gen 2 sedan looks much sexier that the gen 2 coupe. My hat goes off to you Gen 2 sedan owners, the G coupe > G sedan battle may soon see its tables turned.

I don't agree that the official G37 Coupe has a "spaceship looking interior". not at all. The concept has the "spaceship looking interior". And unfortunately in my eyes and most others we were hoping to get results looking much closer to the concept.
true very true!

The difference b/w old gen & new is only marginal that isnt enough and we expected much more. Weve been used to the old gen, and the new gen is minimal change in my opinion.

In the end.. it comes down to mass appeal. i dont need a "designer" telling me what's wrong with a car.. just like me saying how badly a "designer" designs cars! Opinions are like.... everybody has one! including me.
Taken another way.. how many people realy care if a movie gets a bad review by Ebert & Roeper (formerly Siskel & Ebert).. who cares!! it just might appeal to me.

So far it looks like the "mass appeal" or most members on here are pretty surprised and dissppointed. no? I think you ar every much overrating the results of the New Gen G. I have to disagree with you. Lets see what more people hav eto say.

The only reason I made this analysis is to give the perspective of someone that draws pretty pictures all day for a living. I too (like the designers who designed this car) have some formal training in design basics, so I figured I would make an educated analysis. I figured having my background, those that dislike the car as well will have someone with a design background on their side. After all, when you are sick you go to a doctor. When your car is broken you go to a mechanic. So why not go to a designer for opinions on design? Sorry if I aggravated you, totally not my intention.
I saw somewhere that the nose of the car looked like every other nose that's coming out of Japan of late. I have to agree because for some reason, the design elicits thoughts of Solara or SC430. As strange as this seems, I'm even seeing some similarities to the new Altima 2DR Coupe. Personally, I'm mixed on the new design. I liked the front bumper much better on the concept. That looked sick and it was unique. These are also just my opinions. I'm not trying to say there's anything overtly wrong with the car, it's received a lukewarm reception in my mind. I think mechanically, the car is going to be awesome, 3.7l, VVEL, 14"/13.8" F/R Rotors is sick! I hope they would offer that brake package on the '08 sedan as I plan to buy one. I need more room.
As someone who's driven the '07 Sedan (5AT), I think the car definitely needs a 6th gear. I just don't see a real need to be spinning the engine at ? 3,000 rpm is excessive and unnecessary.

I prefer the present design to the 2nd generation, but it's not that bad where I wouldn't buy an '08. After seeing what's been coming out of BMW for the last few years, it could have been far worse and there are some BMWs that I wouldn't buy because of their weird design. When you over reach in design, your intent may have been to strive for the sublime, but more often than not you achieve the ridiculous.

Actually I indeed went to school for industrial design, which is pretty much designing for any given industry. I have formal training in product design, furniture design, automotive design, environmental design, graphic design, packaging and pop design as well. I have a pretty well-rounded design background. BTW thanks for not going berserk on me like a few others. Glad you noticed it was just an opinion.

i would hardly call those who differ with your opinion as going "berserk". I'm here to learn more about cars and the people who drive them.. if i have something to say.. you'll here it here first! if you were offended..posting on a forum may not be the place for you.

7500 rpm redline, new engine, larger engine, better handling, less flexible chassis, better interior, more technology, bigger brakes. How is that "marginal"?
Design is subjective, and the opinions people have is all welcome - but how can you call the changes marginal?
April 6th car show will be the deciding factor for me. If it looks good in person, then it's a done deal. From what we read, it offers so much outside of the styling. Good looks will be the nail in the coffin. If it looks bad, then I'll go with the G sedan or 335 coupe (which is "nice" with the sport wheels, although not overly exciting).

I am not suprised about the reaction to the G37c from the G35c owners..
The 1st gen Sedan folks for the most part liked the original design of the
original better than the new one too......though both new models look great.
