Trunk Open error message when cycling Convertible
Trunk Open error message when cycling Convertible
I recently tried opening my convertible and it got stuck halfway through the operation, then got an error message “trunk open” on the dash. Had to turn on/off the car a few times so it would fully close back up. Did a little looking and found that the latch itself was loose, removed the trunk liner and both screws that held the trunk latch in place (on to the trunk body) had both fallen off. Tightened them up, closed everything black up and re-tried the top sequence. Same outcome, same message only this time I noticed that driver side of the trunk was not completely in sync with the passenger side during sequence and on top of that, the driver side flapper seems to be “loose” not fully in place as the passenger side flapper. I was told that maybe I could have a faulty trunk sensor, or the flapper itself, or maybe a re-learn could fix the problem. Has any had similar issues and found a solid fix? Any feedback is appreciated.
If the flappr is loose, ie, moves around easily rather than being firm but out of place, it's likely you are experiencing the beginnings of the dreaded flapper gear issue, where the plastic gear teeth begin to break. Search on it and you'll find several threads on it.
I had a similar problem where my roof would only open halfway and I'd get the "Trunk Open" message on the dash. However, I was able to close my roof without having to turn the car on/off.
After lengthy troubleshooting, it ended up being a broken wire between the roof latch and the control unit. I ran a new wire and that resolved the issue.
If you don't already have them, you can search for NICOclub and get the service manuals. They'll help identify the wires to test (and how to access the roof latch and control unit). In my case the wire between connector B657, terminal 4 and connector B82, terminal 16 was broken.
Connector B657 is the connector on the roof latch mechanism. Connector B82 is on the control unit. I had an extra 10 ft network patch cable. I pulled out one of the wires from that to use as my replacement wire. I ran it from the control unit through the roof on the drivers side and spliced it in as close to the connectors as I could.

ISSUE FIXED - Gear replacement.
Planetary gear repair was done to fix this issue. There?s a great video on YouTube posted by ?Frank? - he explains every step in great detail. (

For the gear itself I found it on Amazon for about $25-35, got it within a day. Only ordered one side, but they also sell the pair for more.
For the rivets needed to hold up the flapper (once finished repairing it) you can find at Home Depot/Lowes. The diameter needed is 3/16 and for the actual length of the rivet, I used 1/2. Once everything was put back on, I didn?t need to do a re-learn or anything really, just re-ran the close/open sequence a few times and worked perfectly. Hope this info helps someone else facing the same problem.
