While the G37 RHT is more "involved -" (ie. complex)- than my BMW Zed/4, they are both designed/ produced by the same manufacturer- Karmann. That said, for BMW at least, none of the RHT "joints" get any type of lubricant as the bearings are "lifetime sealed." Stands to reason that the same potentially applies to the G37. Take that for what it is...

There is zero mention either in the owners manual nor in the shop manual addressing the need for any PM/ lubrication of the RHT mechanism. That said, I'd leave it alone. However, if you are noticing the parcel shelf is "binding" or is not drawing as smooth as it should, or if the threaded rod is excessively "dry" I would use a small dab of either silicone or white lithium grease as a last resort type of measure. Place a small dab on a rag or sponge and apply directly to the rod. I would not recommend using any type of spray as the overspray will likely make a mess and potentially damage the different plastic pieces. But, as the old sating goes: if it ain't broke don't try fixing it.

DO NOT USE, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, WD-40 OR EQUIVALENT ON ANY OF THE RHT COMPONENTS. PETROLEUM-BASED LUBRICANTS CAN POTENTIALLY DESTROY THE RHT BEARINGS.

Thanks!!

Tha ks for that info. I too couldn’t find any documentation on those rods so that is why I posted this question. Not 100% sure it is not operating properly, but I didn’t move my roof all winter and wanted to make sure it was tip-top before trying…but I guess if it’s not broke, why try to fix.

thanks again for the response…
