Convertible season is upon us. Question about lubing stuff up.

Ok fellas. Just got done with my first winter in the vert. Looking for some info on what to keep lubed up since the top will be open most of the time. What should I lube and what kind of lube should I use?

My suggestion is to let the dealer do it and not try yourself if you dont know what your doing. If you search through this vert section you will read about my debacle trying to lube things up. The rubber weatherstriping in between each panel should be wiped down with a dry silicone lube, but if you stop the top half way up or down so you can reach the striping, the top will slowly sink into the trunk. When that happens, its a tow to the shop with your trunk lid open like a parachute. The tow will cause more damage as your top bounces in the trunk unsecured. Has to be reset by tech and computer. Go get an oil change and they will lube ya up.....

^exactly what he said. What I'm going to do is every other oil change ill try and have the dealership lube the gaskets and all other necessary parts so everything is in tip top shape.

The dealership is to far from me to go for an oil change which why I asked. I was more concerned about stuff that I can do, I.e the area where the roof closes and hooks in, should anything be done there?

I havent lubed or greased any of the mechanical parts of the top yet. I did see one where the owner sprayed something on all the pivit points, and that lube seemed to attracted more dust and dirt than before. Dry silicone lube is the way to go I guess. I just wipe stuff down to keep the brackets and such looking clean.

The posts herein seem to indicate that Gummi Pfledge is the product of choice. The real problem seems to be how to do it yourself instead of having a dealer do it. Once the warranty is over I see no need for dealers for routine maintenance and I hate to think how much they will charge for a 1x per year "lube" of the top seals.

Got the car back from the dealer, no more noise from the top or rattling. They kept it for a total of two days and they did a great job. Covered by warranty. Around $900 charged back to the dealer and numerous seals replaced.

So, is "lubing the roof" a euphemism? Just saying...

so I went to the dealer there is no preventive lube per se. They only lube it if the roof is rattling, and while they have it open they lubricate everything.

But the convertible is still in Md. I will probably bring it up to Chicago in 2 weeks or so.

Is there a meet coming up with chicagoZ?
