do you think having a 6MT will help or hurt resale value?
hey everybody,
obviously there aren't nearly as many 6MT verts out there as automatics. this is most likely due to the reason that automatics are just in more demand. more people like automatics than 6MT.
so... here's my question: do you think having a 6MT will help (since it's more rare) or hurt (since nobody wants it) resale value?
i purchased my 2010 6MT almost 2 years ago and have no regrets and i don't plan on selling it anytime soon. this is just something i was randomly wondering about.
what do you guys think?

I had to special order my 6mt because no one within a reasonable distance had it in stock. I also had a trade which made the deal more challenging.
To answer the question, I think it will help the resale value because it's a rarer vehicle. It may take longer to sell, but I think you'll get more for it than the AT.
It used to be that a car with an AT would cost more, but these days it seems the other way around

+1. in general, it will "help", as in you will get the premium asking price as long as the car is tip-top otherwise.
of course, if you go to trade in the car they will tell you that 6MT hurts resale. they say this because it may take a bit longer to sell (to find the right buyer) and they factor in turnover. but then if you go to buy it from a dealer they'll say it is "rare", and to jump on it fast. standard sales tactics.
for private sales you'll be slightly better off. those of us who are looking for a 6MT will wait for the right car to pop up. i sold my '04 6MT G35 sedan in 1 day a few years ago to a guy who had been waiting for months. the dealer offered me $10k, in part due to the "stigma" of a manual sedan. i got $16,500 largely due to the rarity and excellent condition.
i'm confident that when i go to sell my '09 6MT S sedan eventually it will be snapped up in no time, for a fair price to both the buyer and myself.

Rare of a car = more in demand ... simple
Eventually when you do sell it, you will find a buyer who will be interested in a 6MT vert. Although it might take a while but from what i've seen, there's a buyer out there for everything. For example when i bought my G37 coupe, mine is a rare colour combo (graphite on stone/wheat leather). Most of the young crowd prefer black interior, and the mature gen who will actually dig for this combo, prefer automatic (mostly). I am just reaching 30 but i still was in the market for this exact same combo. The dealer listed the car in morning, i went and saw it in the eve and paid a deposit in no time as i was looking for this combo in the market. The dealership couldn't believe that they would have sold this colour combo THIS soon. I don't think you should judge resale by the type of the transmission although on these cars 6MT definitely holds more value than automatics. It's the rarity and the right buyer which will get you the max resale out of it.

On the other hand, it seems that the number of people driving manual is diminishing gradually - fewer and fewer people know how to drive it, or care to learn. Automatics have gotten much better than they used to be... Also, the manual on the G37 isn't among the best, unfortunately.

While visualguy does have a point, due to supply and demand I feel that people who want manuals will def pay a premium to have one if given the chance. Also following these lines of reasoning with regard to supply and demand: How much more of a premium would a 6MT sedan fetch over an AT sedan versus a 6MT coupe over an AT coupe since there are less 6MT sedans than 6MT coupes? Or more simply put (and all these numbers are theoretical), if you could sell a 6MT coupe at 110% of the price of a similarly spec'ed used AT coupe, how much of a premium could a person place on a used 6MT sedan versus a used AT sedan with all other things being the same? 115%? 125%?

so would you guys agree that resale value of the car will hold better than an AT but it's very probably that it will take longer to sell because there are less buyers in the market for a 6MT?

You should be fine OP ... 6MT's always did and always will hold more value than a slush box no matter what. If a enthusiast is in the market, your car will be sold in no time. I yet have to see a 6MT being sold way under market value or lesser than an automatic transmission (especially the G's). Supply demand rule of thumb ... again ... simple.
