Is this bad?

So I let my brother-in-law take the g out for a ride (with me in the passenger seat). I told him the car had decent power but not tire smoking power - it's a 2010 7AT. He proceeded to apply the brake and floor the gas which did provide some tire smoke.

My question is: is this bad for the car/transmission? He told me that it does no harm because the front brakes are holding the car so the wheels can spin. I think he's an idiot, but so are most brother-in-laws. Who's right?

First off, if it were me, I'd tell my BIL to stay the hell away from my car in the future. I doubt if it hurt anything this one time but it is not good on your car to do this. The front brakes are holding the car in place but at the same time , the rears are trying to work, too. It is hard on your brakes, tires, rear-end and the transmission.

It's called a burnout. Not a big deal, but I not would let my brother-in-law do it in my car. It does put excess wear and tear on the car, but probably not harm it in the big picture in the life of the car.

BIL is sensitive relative...he probably wanted to tick his sister off...

Not much would happen to the car.

I doubt he had a chance to film the burnout. Maybe his sister was standing nearby with her iPhone taking pics or vid. Catching the wonderful smile on his face as BIL slimmed down his tires. Hahahaha. Good luck spider. Suggestion: keep BIL out of your car!

No Vid or Pics since we were out together on the road (though the burnout in question was in the Lowes parking lot).

NEVER let him in your car again. its hard on the transmission, diff, brakes, and tires. He will tell you its not doing anything like said above, so he can do it again. BIL has no respect for you car, otherwise he wouldnt of done it. It wouldnt of done any damage the first time, but i wouldnt recommend letting this guy drive your car.

What does he drive? Next time you're in his car, do the same. If he's cool about you shredding his tires you know he meant what he said. Me, I like to have the tires last me at least 20k so anyone pulling one of those on me gets the bill for a new set of rear wheel tires.

doing it once in a while is no big deal....but constantly doing it will cause major issues

look at it this way....your brakes are holding on to the disk....while you're forcing the disk to spin....thats gunna cause the rear pads to wear out. it also causes stress on the transmission and differential.
