Ok so what makes the most sense here. Just replace the retainers and springs and buckets along with Galley gasket and timing job at same time?
Cars in storage over the winter so I have some time to sort out my plan of action. Is It worth it to upgrade the springs, any other things I can replace with performance parts while I'm in there.
I read it's quite involved. I've done virtually everything on my cars but internal engine work. I'm capable of discipline and ReadingTFM, also have a decent amount of tools and will acquire whats needed. Is this something I can handle or should I consider sending it to an independent?

In my opinion in 2023 it's not worth the hassle. Removing the VVEL cam ladder to access these springs and retainers is a job within itself. VVEL has to be repositioned, cam ladder assembly is sensitive to specific torque specs and on top of all of that you have to do the timing service as well.
Depending on if labor is the same price wise, you should look into a new engine. Newer Q50 engines are averaging $700-$900 and these are usually 2014+ ( more peace of mind on gallery gaskets).
You'll spend about the same money in replacement parts as a replacement engine. A newer engine should technically be a bit faster but the idea is to squeeze another 100k without worries.
Good luck
PS: Sonic VQ called that one out I would have never guessed that in a million years. Kind of save y'all some money and induced some anxiety at the same time.

My original gut feeling was retainers, but I didn't realize it was possible to crack like this and stay together and make no noise for who knows how long. I guess It will be babied and rpm kept low. If it blow it blows.
I'll be looking into used engines here in Ontario, Canada in the mean time. Glad I know now but definitely some new anxiety about it being a time bomb.
