Air/Fuel ratio, Coolant & Oil temp PLUS Oil Pressure DIY Display

I have a small update....
I now have a working prototype of a small multi-gauge display that displays engine coolant temp, engine oil temp, current air/fuel ratio and engine oil pressure.
Only an engine oil pressure sensor is needed. All the other data is from the car's CAN bus or OBD requests.

PLUS with the engine oil pressure sensor being connected to the "Bluetooth sensor server" there is now no need to route a few wires through the dash. For those that have done this, you know it is not a quick or easy task. The magic of Bluetooth solves this problem.

Here is a short video showing it in action:

Thanks to all for the positive comments!

Two things that have surprised me:
• Our engine oil pressure is VERY high!
>>> More than 120 psi on a cold start (well, In Toronto during December)
>>> With engine oil at or above 80C/176F we still have 90+ psi at high engine RPM
• The differential oil can heat up 3C/5F during a single 0-60 mph run. (and that was during a 0C / 32F day)

Keep the videos coming @MotorvateDIY . You're a wealth of information and is much appreciated. I hope you never sell this car and keep us informed of your new discoveries :-)

May the Canadien winter be mild for you

Hey @petemo94 , thanks for your kind words!

I have recorded spark plug replacement (with boroscope video!), front sport brake rotors, sunroof drain replacement and 3 year diff bushing "epoxy fix" update. They need script, voice over and editing. Then on the OBD4Everyone channel, I have 3 reviews I need to get done. (BlueDriver, FIXD, and Carista)

My main focus has been developing an easy to install gauge/display that shows oil pressure (via Bluetooth so no wires through the dash), coolant temp, oil temp and auto trans fluid temp.
Funny thing is that this all started because I wanted something for my car and then thought other VHR owner's might like it too.

I work on this stuff everyday and hope to get a few items off my "To Do" list soon

Small hardware update!
We have moved off the breadboard to a "development mule", single board system.
This will allow testing of displaying all Bluetooth sensors, PLUS CAN bus, PLUS OBD Live data.

Next step:
Grab a coffee and get coding

This is my favorite thread to watch and wait for updates. Can't wait to kick the mule to the curb and see the final product!

Me too!

On a different note, today I received 4 different 1/8 BSP oil pressure sensors. This is the same thread as the block and will easily screw in WITHOUT an adapter. (the usual 1/8 BSP to 1/8 NPT)
My goal is to make the oil pressure sensor as easy as possible to install.

I will be testing them tonight to verify their accuracy.

Motorvate is absolutely brilliant! I will be buying this module when its finished. Ill pay the cost plus a case of beer lol.

On a side note i just grabbed and obd mx+ because of your review on all bluetooth obd modules to replace my bafx and love it!!! The size difference and extra space i gained from it alone was worth the upgrade let alone all the other benefits!

Thanks for your kind words!
The MX+ is still my favourite wireless OBD scanner.
The OBDLink SX, with OTG (on the go cable) and Android tablet is my favourite and fastest (180+ PIDs/sec when used with OBDLink or OBDFusion!!)

@MotorvateDIY Frank, out of curiosity, are there any updates to this project?

Yes!

For the last 7 months I have been testing it in my G37 every time I drive the car.
Overall, it has worked well and as expected... BUT about once every 25-30 times it powers up, it reboots over and over.

After pressing the reset button, it starts up normally. (I suspect an interrupt or stack issue...but it is difficult to troubleshoot because it doesn't happen often)

The latest version will data log everything to a microSD card if it is inserted.
It creates a CSV file that you can view/analyze with any spreadsheet program or something like datazap.me

With the cruise control on/off button, you can cycle through the 16 pages of gauges:
  • Engine coolant temp, engine oil temp, air/fuel ratio bank1, engine oil pressure
  • Air/fuel ratio bank1, air/fuel ratio bank2, engine coolant temp, engine oil temp
  • Individual wheel speed (FL, FR, RL, RR)
  • Fuel pressure, engine oil pressure, manual trans oil temp, differential oil temp
  • Mass air flow 1 g/s, mass air flow 2 g/s, intake air temp, manifold absolute pressure
  • Mass air flow 1 g/s, mass air flow 2 g/s, absolute throttle position bank 1 + bank 2
  • Absolute throttle position bank 1 + bank 2, accelerator pedal position, cylinder #1 ignition timing
  • Bank 1 short term fuel trim, bank 2 short term fuel trim, bank 1 long term fuel trim, bank 2 long term fuel trim,
  • Air/fuel ratio bank1, air/fuel ratio bank2, rear O2 voltage bank 1, rear O2 voltage bank 2
  • Tire pressures FL, FR, RL, RR
  • Engine torque, steering wheel angle, AWD % (aka front axle torque), lateral acceleration (g)
  • Engine coolant temp, engine oil temp, manual trans oil temp, differential oil temp
  • AT7 only: auto trans oil temp, input shaft RPM, current A/T gear, output shaft RPM
  • Brake line pressure, barometer, cruise control set speed, outside air temp
  • Rad ran speed (%), calculated HP, control module voltage, engine torque
  • Intake air temp, calculated engine CFM, barometer, total engine air flow
Here is a video showing the prototype gauges in action:
16 Page Mini-Dash/LCD Gauge Update! MotorvateDIY Garage Ep.42

With the electronics / supply chain situation improving, I will be designing the circuit board soon and then test that.

I am also working on re-programming the G37 NAV unit to show the GT-R gauges.
This will use a custom CAN bus module to provide the required data like oil temp, oil pressure, AWD %, etc.

One last thing...
I think I found a way to display my phone on the NAV screen...
I've ordered a few AV modules to test and will dig into this when they arrive.
