It was the starter. Had a new (reman) starter installed two days ago. And now the car starts immediately every single time.
I guess these things happen.
Still, only 40k miles on it.

Glad you got it fixed. You do it yourself or shop? If latter, I bet towing was a stressful experience?

Took it to my mechanic. Curiously, after sitting and not starting at all throughout August, it started right up the morning I was all ready to pop the clutch, and failing that, call for a flatbed. So I got real lucky there.
