P1093 code returns again days later

a couple days ago, got the 'service engine soon' light, checked the code P1093. Had it cleared, and a couple days later (aka, on the next real drive), it came back mid trip.

fudge ..... (VVEL bank 1 too rich)

2011 G37S,

who here has gone through this? Did it get resolved by forking over the $2K+ to a dealer?

A P1093 code is defined as: VVEL system performance (bank 2)
and is declared when:

• The VVEL angle between the actual and the target is different.
• Abnormal current is sent to VVEL actuator motor.

The code has nothing to do with a lean or rich condition.

Unless you have special tools and a VERY good understanding of the VVEL system, it is best to have the dealer look at it.

If you know how to use a meter, you could do a few of the simple checks on page EC-408 of the factory shop manual. (google g37 fsm)

Good luck!

Might this be the infamous gasket issue?

Good question, but I don't thinks so...

The VVEL system is mechanical and does not rely on oil pressure. I uses a DC motor to change the pivot point of the rockers for each bank and that changes the valve lift.

The VCT / variable cam timing DOES rely on oil pressure to advance or retard the camshaft timing.

problem is finding a shop to go through the FSM steps. We just moved to williamsburg, VA, and the dealer I had been using is on the otherside of the state. I am very nervous about the local nissan dealer's service department.

code returned, would come back immediately after clearing. Limped 8 mph to the dealer. Dealer supposedly checked relays, and has come back and says the head needs replacement. $4500 estimate parts and labor

I'm not convinced. Sadly, I can't offer a reason why.

confused, 'not convinced?' meaning, you don't think it should cost 4500 to replace, or you don't believe its the head? Or your not convinced that they actually checked the relays first (yah, I'm not either. I still have difficulties believing a 2011 G37 would need a whole new head, since I haven't heard of this being a typical issue).

But, in its current state, the car can't be sold. I don't want to sell it, I believe it could have another 5-10 years of life if I drive it as a commuter car (and retire it from HPDE duty).

Not convinced anything is wrong with the head. I think they're guessing.

and just liked the first few times. The code cannot be immediately cleared. Meaning, if you do, it immediately comes back. But if you shut the car off, and then come back 30-45 minutes later (maybe hour or more, just guessing from timing of events), then if 'torque' app is used, then the code can be cleared, OR the car will start up without the service engine light.

Car has been driven back to the dealer. I believe this is the sign of the end of this car, since I don't have any way to know of a servicing dealer who is actually capable of solving this problem reliably.
