Just verified that I do have small drips on both Valve Cover Gaskets. Infiniti want's $700.00 to replace, Nissan will do it for under $500.00. Anything else that should be done once they are in there?

 

are you still under powertrain warranty? i assume not given your handle. i'd go to a trusted independent for a 3rd quote. i bet they'd come well under Nissan's number...pretty straightforward job.

can't think of much else to do, it's relatively superficial parts. clean the TB's perhaps? maybe spark plugs too depending on mileage.

 

Thanks Canuckle! I changed the plugs 10K miles ago at 85K miles. I also cleaned the TB's, so it looks like the gasket kit is all I need.

 

Just picked up the car from Nissan, the final total was $448.00. $250 less than Infiniti. I don't know any shops that work on Infiniti's so I probably paid too much, but at least I have peace of mind and the Nissan warranty.

 

Wow. Thanks. I wonder why Nissan is so much cheaper. My Infiniti Dealership is charging me $850 to replace the gasket. The cover replacements would be $1,200. I know a mechanic who needs to see my car, but he estimated that it would cost about $400. The gasket is about $20, and the rest is labor. I will get mine replaced soon. Thanks for the info!!

I'm pretty sure GLENN2008 was referring to $500 to replace the "gasket", not the covers. The covers alone is $250+ EACH.

$500 sounds about right. The shop that I contacted said that it might be around $400, but he'll have to see the car. I have a feeling that he hasn't worked on an Infiniti before. Not sure if I want to take that risk.

 

Hmm. Not sure if that was a good move. The valvecovers are sh*tty plastics and if it's anything like the G35, the sparkplugs "gaskets" are built-in and fail around the 70k mark. Causing oil to leak onto the plugs.

 

They are not like the vq35. The tube seals are replaceable

 

I agree with Vr4. From my research, the covers and the gaskets are 2 separate things. The Gaskets can be replaced without replacing the covers, but not sure the other way around. If the Covers need to be replaced, I am not sure if reusing the old Gaskets is a good idea. Will probably need to replace the Gaskets if you are replacing the covers.

The issue with my car is that both of the gaskets need to be replaced, not the covers. The gaskets run about $20-30 each and the covers run about $250-300 each. The other part of the total cost for Gasket replacement and Cover replacement, $850 and $1,200, respectively, is all labor, which probably includes removal/installation, cleaning the oil in the area, parts disposal, etc....

Note: the prices I provided above is from the Infiniti dealership that I bought my car from and where I go for all maintenance. The dealership is located in the Washington Metropolitan Area, which might be higher than other cities in the country.

 

Yeah, that's rather high labor rate. A Nissan dealer was quoting $400 in another thread about these gaskets. Nissan dealers will generally work on Infinitis unless access to the ecu is required.

 

Yeah, I read that. I called 2 Nissan dealerships today, and waiting for them to call me back with a quote. I will provide the price once I hear from them.

I also reached out to a shop that services high end vehicles, and they quoted me at $670.00. I get 10% off service (coupon) at the Infiniti, which would bring the price down from $850 to $765. At $670, I rather go to my dealership.

 

Why wouldn't they work on it? Wouldn't the ECU be the same since it's the same engine?
