Service Engine Soon

During a recent drive from Toronto to Pennsylvania, while idling for a few minutes in a Buffalo parking lot, the 'Service Engine Soon' light came on steadily and it's been like this since. Mine is a 2013 G37S M6 sedan. When the light came on the mileage was 38,830 km.

I am sure the gasoline-filler cap was not loose. Is there a typical emissions control component that goes bad in these vehicles?

Easiest way to figure it out is to take it to an o'reillys or anywhere with obd2 scanner, its free so.. one of the more common codes that pop up is P0106 which is the MAP sensor.

No... You need to read the error code that trigger that light to find out exactly what's wrong.

isn't your car still covered under warranty? basic bumper to bumper is 4yr 50k. powertrain is 5yr 60K. then you got federal extended emissions warranty that cover many engine controlled sensors, modules, and components up to 8yrs 80k. go to the dealer and get it taken care of.

Thanks. Yes, it is still covered by the Canadian warranty. I don't know how this would work while I am here, in the USA. I may take the car to the nearest Nissan dealership to see what they say. There's no Infiniti dealer close to where I am, the nearest one is 60 miles away. I hope it's nothing major so I could make the 500 km back to Canada in the New Year, and then I could service it there.

Or, you could have the error code pulled like the other gentleman in the thread have suggested so you know what you are dealing with. If you don't have an auto parts store local to you, you can buy a bluetooth OBD2 and use a mobile application on your phone to pull the code.

OK, so I firstly went to the local Nissan dealership and they would not perform warranty service on Infinitis. They wanted $100 just to simply read the error code. No way!

Then I went to Sears Automotive and within a minute they told me the code: P0116 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. I asked them to reset the code, which they kindly did. I will see if it comes on again. The FSM indicates either a faulty sensor or faulty harness or faulty connector.

At this point, unless you guys tell me otherwise, I don't think this would be a critical issue and perhaps I should be okay to drive back to Canada in a few days and have it serviced there, at the Infiniti dealership.

Opinions, suggestions, comments?... Thanks.

If the light doesn't come back (with same DTC set) then I'd just leave it as is. The code means the sensor is reading incorrectly/out of range. This could affect drivability as many things rely on being able to properly read engine temp.

warranty is warranty. i've worked at both honda and mercedes dealers and i have seen customer bring in their canadian mercedes and or their mexican hondas. the dealer runs the vin to make sure warranty is valid and they will handle the problem. but then again 60miles to the nearest dealer is pretty out of the way if you are not worried with it.

what if you moved here to the states with your car? i don't think a company like nissan/infinti would tell their customer to take their vehicle back to the country of original purchase to have warranty repairs taken care of.

Well, yes, except I was told by the local Nissan dealership here that they would not provide warranty service to a Canadian Infiniti vehicle and that I'd have to go to the nearest dealer of Infiniti 60 miles away. The Nissan dealership said to me that the Infiniti dealership would cover the warranty but they (i.e. Nissan) would be perfectly happy to look at the car if I pay for the service.

The Nissan dealership would not even want to read the error code for free, they wanted $100 + tax for this. So I told them "thank you very much for your kindness and helpfulness", and left. Sears Automotive then read and reset the error code for me within 30 seconds, for free. Go figure!

Don't think Nissan dealer will warranty Infiniti and vice versa, unless that store sells both, regardless of country. Same as let's say Toyota/Lexus. I couldn't even get my local Nissan store to program a o.e.m. key fob customer pay, said they couldn't, pretty sure that was bs, they were just outta touch, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyways, clear the code and roll on till it comes back.

With all respect: Elco, Elco.... not true. They can read all/any OBD-2 code from the ECU.
Other modules (ABS, transmission, etc) require special tools.

why in the world would you take your infiniti to a nissan dealer for warranty issues? never did i post any comment in regards to taking your infiniti to the nissan dealer. i specifically referred to your distant 60mile infiniti dealer if you were worried about the light. its a no brainer that the nissan dealer would want to charge you to inspect your infiniti.
just like when i worked at the honda dealer we didn't warranty any acura vehicle repairs and vice versa. again if you are soooo concerned with the MEL being on take it to the correct dealer.

Sorry, but you don't need to be aggressive. I did not need warranty service but only a code reading. It would not have been worthwhile to drive 60 miles just for that. In any case, as I mentioned, Sears Automotive read the code for me, for free.
