6mt 2012 G37S 1st gear acceleration problems
HELP // 6mt 2012 G37S 1st gear acceleration problem
I have a 6mt 2012 G37S that I bought used. The car use to bog in 2nd gear but I got the clutch replaced and that fixed it. Everything seems fine now except for first gear. When I want to accelerate from a stop the revs build way to quickly and I don't get a lot of power. Every other gear is perfect. Also the gear changes in low gears are very loud at times.
If anyone has any pointers in fixing these issues please let me know. Thanks!

First gear is a pretty short gear on this car. It could just be something to get used to. If the clutch was slipping, it would be slipping in other gears too.
What do you mean by noisy? If your timing is correct, the gear change should be smooth.

I've heard that 1st gear is very short in this car but what speed should I expect when the engine is around 5k rpm in first gear? It feels as though alot of power is being lost in fisrt but once I go to second it's a rocket. Also what exactly is the timing? Thanks.
Yea, I think it something to get used to. Mine feels the exact same way. 1st gear feels sluggish almost like it bogs down if you outright floor it, but when you hit 2nd it just takes off.
When I was car shopping I test drove another G37 6MT and I thought something was wrong with it as well when I experienced it, but once I got my car and felt the same thing, I figured its just something to get used to. Sux at times because my former Altima 6MT felt faster from a jump and was much easier to get the tires lose and get that tire chirp shifting into 2nd, but we all know which is the faster car.
One thing I have learned is that the car reacts better if you roll into full throttle instead of straight out flooring it. I managed once to get a good jump in 1st and get that chirp going into 2nd. I'm sure I can do it more often but the thing sux so much gas I find myself going easier in my driving now trying to eek out as much MPG as I can.

I've had this happen before, but only because I mashed the accelerator instead of easing into it. My guess is that your clutch is slipping - keep in mind that the car weighs a hefty 3700 pounds plus driver and fuel, so it's pushing 4000. As the others have said, first is a short gear so don't expect to hit 60 like the new camaro zl1.
On another note, does anyone know what speed first gear is restricted to? I've never tried hitting the rev limiter

I've got mine timed pretty perfectly, I have to upshift the paddle to 2nd at about 30mph or it'll hit the limiter around 35-36mph. I have a 5AT with stock gears fyi
Yeah, 1st gear is tough to get a good smooth pickup. I've driven manual transmission cars for 40 years and I have to say the clutch in my 2012 G37s is the worst I've ever driven. An Infiniti test car with a stick wasn't available when I was shopping for a new car. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have bought this car.
On this forum I discovered the RJM clutch pedal assembly. I bought one, but haven't installed it yet due to the fact it'll void the warranty and since the G37 has a history of slave cylinder issues I decided to wait for the warranty to expire. Which, now that I think about will happen in 2 months. So, I guess it's time
The forum members who have installed the RJM seem to really love it. Here's a couple of links.

It's pointless to compare AT/MT. The transmission gear ratios are different as is the rear end gear. Apples to bananas!
Low end torque is not one of the highlights of this engine. You want grunt, get a v8 camaro. This engine doesn't really start to come online until about 3500 rpm or higher.
@kickintheglass The only restriction is the rev limiter which comes on at some point after 7500. If you really see the need, take your car to redline in first gear. When it starts cutting out, you've reached the revlimiter
I'd guess it's somewhere around 35-40 mph?

If the car pulls harder in second gear than first gear, I suspect you have a traction problem, and the VDC is reducing engine power. Turn off the VDC and try full throttle in first gear and see if it pulls any harder.
If your "revs build way to quickly and I don't get a lot of power", your clutch may not be working as it should. If you turn of VDC can you do a burn out in 1st?

I previously posted here saying I had a similar problem as the OP. I tried turning off VDC and I can easily spin the tires in 1st so I'm assuming that was my power cut. Everything seems normal

Boo..
