Blue smoke

Hey everyone I have a 2009 G37X sedan. I bought it with a blue smoke problem. At 69,000 miles 6 months ago. It currently has 81,700 miles. It blue smokes upon COLD start. Brought it the dealer and said that they couldn't find a problem. Anyone experienced blue smoke upon cold startup??

Any advice would be awesome!!

Did you get a printout that the dealer performed compression/leak-down tests?

blue smoke is burning oil. i would bet it not only smokes at startup, but also at full throttle. you're probably getting some blow by at the rings. did your dealer do a compression check for each cylinder?

They said there was no blue smoke when I gave it to the mechanics for a couple days.

I want to charge with dealer fraud because it started at 68,000 miles when I got the car and that's ridiculous. The company name is shift.com and is centered in California.

This might be a long shot, but check for dirty valve covers.

Shortly after i got my car with 34k it would occasionally spew a big cloud of smoke on startup. Needless to say, I was as pissed as you are.

Went to the dealership. Compression check was fine. Dealership mechanics were stumped and said i needed a new engine and if it turned out to be gunked up it wouldnt be covered. told me to sell it before I had an issue. I didn't see any sludge through the oil fill hole but wasn't going to take an $8000 gamble.

Now, I'd been working on my own cars since i was 16 and noticing a pattern in when it would blow smoke, had a thought. I pulled the PCV valves and behind the drivers side valve there was a puddle of nasty black gunky oil. The valve cover has a channel with baffles in it for the pcv valve and, at some point, the last owner went a bit too long on an oil change and a bit of sludgy oil partially dammed the channel.

I stuffed a hose in the PCV hole, attached my fluid extractor and pulled hard vacuum and got chunks of goo. I then drained off some oil from the pan, drew up a quart of fresh oil and slammed it through the PCV hole to flush whatever else was left in there.

Switched to a diet of full synthetic to clean up whatever else was left in there. 30k miles later and no smoke. Car runs fine

How long did it take you to go through a quart of oil? I am a while from my 3,000 mile change and am close to almost using a quart of oil.

The blue smoke only occurs upon cold start. Have 89K miles.

I was going through a quart every couple thousand miles. I have zero oil consumption after cleaning the passages in the valve covers. All that oil mist that was supposed to collect on the baffles and drip back down into the crankcase was instead getting sucked through the PCV valve into the intake. Puff of smoke was only on start for me because the oil on the baffles would drip into the puddle behind the PCV as the car sat and fill it up. When the car would start it would take a gulp of that oil then the baffles would collect more mist during driving. The smoke was more frequent when the car was parked facing uphill just due to how the oil would pool in the cover.

Was it only upon cold start. Seems like have the exact same thing. A couple times I drove it hard and it was 106F outside and it was really humid so I was making the car work. Transmission heated up a lot. Not sure why sometimes it's clunky but here in California it's really hot and a couple times it burned blue smoke when i started it hot. It only does it on COLD start, and on a 90F+ day where the car is in the sun for hours it won't get the blue smoke issue.
I use pennzoil high mileage oil in the gold container. Switched from Mobil 1. Hoping to switch to aamsoil next.

Any thoughts ?

Start small and replace the PCV valves.

Usually it was on a cold start, but it couuls also happen on a warm start if i parked facing uphill due to the way the oil collected in the PCV channel

Blue smoke on startup usually indicates leaky valve stem seals. While the car sits small amounts of oil leak past the seals and then burns off when first started.

The valve cover issue i mentioned above does the same thing. Oil mist collects in the gutter behind the PCV while the car sits then it pulls it through the intake on startup.

Sorry for the late response!! So far it is only on cold start. So the pcv valves need replacing?
