Anyone use an insulated clutch cable?

I have a '13 G37S sedan and during one of the last sessions at Road America the clutch went to the floor. I think I was keeping the pedal in just a touch too long as I was heel and toe down shifting as I was quicker with it on the next session and did not have the same problem.

I see that Z1 and Zspeed make them. Zspeed lists the temp they are good for, but their insulator is attached using plastic zip ties which makes me think the Z1 clutch cable insulator might be a little more durable. However, Z1 does not list any temp ratings. Any advice or experience with either is appreciated. Thanks!

I got an insulated line, I forgot which one (they all have Z in the name - it was either Z1 or Z Speed). Probably Z speed, because I bought the Southbend clutch/flywheel and hD CSC from them. But I got that, and then wrapped it with Thermotec heat reflective wrap and secured the Thermotec wrap with metal zip ties like you use on header wrap. They sell the metal zip ties at Harbor Freight for like $5.99 for a bag of 20. No need to get the DEI/Thermotec ones for multiple times as much.

As I said on my other post, I haven't tracked it since these mods, but I've been sitting in very bad traffic where the whole front end of the car heatsoaks, and I didn't notice a difference in the clutch feel. In those exact same conditions in the past with the stock line, I would start to lose the clutch. Let me see if I can find links...

This is the tape/wrap I used:

And here's a link to the metal zip ties:
12 in. Stainless Steel Cable Ties 25 Pk.

And the good thing is that it doesn't hurt to use too much! So I have my clutch line wrapped like 3 or 4 times. Haven't had a problem with temp or losing my clutch pedal!

Good to hear radio. I ordered one from Z1 yesterday since they seem to have good luck on track even with turbos which I do not plan on doing. I imagine doing this with the upgrade to Motul RBF600 fluid should have me all set for track days

My clutch hose is insulated from the factory where it passes by the exhaust.

Are you looking for better insulation, or did your car not come with an insulated line?

No kidding? Hmm... I am not sure, I just assumed it was not insulated and I would really doubt it is stainless steel braided, but I guess I will find out soon enough.

The stock line is a sleeved, rubber line that hangs under the cat. The Z1 stainless line is an upgrade over stock, as it's a better line, and it's also sleeved. The extra wrap that I did could be considered overkill, as is the RBF660 fluid. But in this case, there's no harm in overdoing the heat protection, and losing your clutch sucks.

I could see how you could heat soak the line in bumper to bumper traffic when you are constantly on and off the clutch. On track I was fine the next session when I kept the clutch in just a bit shorter time while heel and toe downshifting. But I am learning that good preventative measures against heat go a long way in this car.
