08 G37s 6MT transmission noise

Hey guys, I know this probably has been talked about a ton on the forum but I can't seem to pinpoint exactly what it is. I just got the car about a week ago with 54k miles on it, drives great, but it was straight piped when I test drove and got the car so I did not hear any noise until I put the stock muffler back on. It kinda sounds like an alternator whine but goes away when the clutch is pushed in. I hear it definitely in 1st and 2nd but can't confirm if it's in any higher gears. I posted a video so you all can hear it.

Any help would be great!
Thanks a lot!

That does sound a little weird. You hear it driving too? A lot of noise comes from a shotty throw out bearing...although that sound you posted sounds different to me.

Yeah it's there when driving. I thought it was the alternator going because that's what it sounds like but then I noticed when I press in the clutch the noise stops. I've dealt with throw out bearings going out before and I agree that this does not sound like that. I don't have a warranty on the car since it's an 08 either so I just hope it isn't something bad.

Some of the 6 speed transmissions sound like that. My 11 G37S makes the exact same sound, it's nothing to worry about.

I've read that it may be the input shaft bearing? I want to change all of the fluids in the car anyway so hopefully a transmission fluid flush will quiet it down a bit. If not I guess I'm putting the straight pipes back on lol

Input shaft! That was the other thing I could not remember last night. That too is a possibility. Try the fluid flush, hopefully that helps. If you get it done with a reputable transmission place they can give you some insight. Hope it all works out. Car drives fine otherwise? Any shifting issues...grinding gears...hard to select gears?

Car drives great besides the noise. Besides the usual feelingless clutch engagement lol. I plan on getting the weaker spring for the pedal eventually to fix that. No grinding gears or shifting issues at all.

Yes, get the lighter action spring for the clutch pedal as soon as you can. I found it made a HUGE difference! Cost very little $ and took less than 30 minutes to swap out with the OEM spring (and I had no idea what I was doing going in! Lol)

I definitely will! There's someone on the forum that sells them right? Or is it something that can be bought online?

Look in the "Group Buys" section. Seller's user name is "JSolo".

Is there anyone who's had this issue but didn't get the transmission replaced but got it to stop? It's such a bothersome noise lol

Logically it would be the front or rear input shaft bearing that has a little play and that results in a slight gear whine. If it doesn't whine in 5th, the noise is from the input shaft. (5th gear = the 2 part input shaft is locked together, and a 1:1 ratio)

It won't hurt to change the gear oil, but it didn't do anything to quiet my transmission. I used the Nissan OEM 80W90 MTL fluid.

I have this exact issue in my 08 6mt. I was told its the throw out bearing, since when i push the clutch down the noise goes away. That was a dead give away, and heard it was an issue on a lot of our motors. Have to switch my clutch, master and slave cylinder soon. Ive been driving like that for 5k miles tho, so it must not be too bad of an issue.

I'll have to drive and see if I hear it in 5th. At first I thought throw out bearing too but it doesn't sound like other throw out bearings I've heard make noise. There is a click when I come off the clutch though. It sorta is a click and then the whine. I just can't imagine at 54k miles that the car would need a new clutch from a bad throw out bearing

Keep in mind, when you push in the clutch, the input shaft stops spinning. It can be very difficult to determine a worn throw out bearing vs input shaft bearing.
