I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I'm kind of stuck. For the last two weeks it feels like my 2009 G37s "slips" when I accelerate at the higher speeds, 60 mph and up. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't reproduce it (not sure why, it happend whenever I drive now). They said it sounds like the clutch but I don't think so, and I don't want to change the clutch out if that's not it. I hit the gas, the RPMs start to rise, then fall back, and rise once more.


I have a video showing the lull in the tachometer but I don't k ow how to post it".

Any thoughts?

 

Are you 6mt? If so what gear would usually happen?

 

sry, yes 6mt. USUALY 4th buts happend in 5th as well.

 

What's your mileage? Sounds like it definitely could be the clutch slipping.

 

Mileage on the current clutch and slave and clutch master? Fluid condition?

 

45K, original clutch. Forgive a stupid question, but I don't know much about cars mechanically wise...why the clutch if this doesn't happen in the act of shifting?

If I do need a clutch, do I need to go to Infiniti or can a local mechanic do it for me? The dealer wants 1500 which seems steep.

Sounds like clutch is going. Test this out by going to 5th gear and go about 30 mph, then floor it and wait until it reaches 40 mph, the rpm should climb very slowly. If it shoots up really fast then your clutch is fried.

 

Do exactly what Nick said and let us know the results. And if you need a new clutch I suggest upgrading to a better one rather than getting another OEM one.

 

Thanks guys, I'm away from home for a few weeks but I will absolutely try this out once I get back. What does a non-OEM "upgraded' clutch get me? Is this something I have changed at the dealer or a local mechanic? Like I said Infinity wants $1500 to put a new clutch in, which sounds steep.

You don't have to get it done at a dealer I would recommend you using a reputable shop around your area it'll be far more affordable or try finding a performance shop as well. I would recommend a JWT kit with a zspeed concentric slave cylinder. Keep in mind you will have to buy a oem master cylinder as well. Concept Z performance has good price on those I paid 1300 for the clutch kit plus a zspeed concentric slave and oem master. Labor should be around 500 dollars as an estimate at a affordable shop. Where are you located? Good luck if you have any questions you can ask me. Keep in mind a aftermarket flywheel will have chatter noise at idle and low rpms which is normal I got used to it and didn't bother me after a while. OEM clutch and flywheel is too expensive that's why a aftermarket is a better option

 

Make sure you get it diagnosed first just because you aren't sure if it's the clutch but most likely it is at that mileage and not the transmission but you never know.

 

No offense at all because we have all been there but if you don't know what a slipping clutch means or how to tell, you should definitely leave it to the mechanics to diagnose it. If you are unhappy with the dealers results, take it to another shop for a second opinion. If you're quoted $1500 parts and labor, that's not terrible but it'll be all OEM or OEM replacements.
