Manual mode in an Automatic
Manual mode in an Automatic
Hey guys,
I tried to search this but no one seems to have this question other than me. I was driving with my friend who owns a 2009 E92 M3 with a Dual Clutch Transmission. He was driving in manual mode, and every time he would slow down to eventually come to a stop, he would downshift as he got slower, and it would rev his car. I've never really tried this, but is this safe to do for your car? I almost always drive my car with either paddles or manually shift the gate since I find the 7AT to be quiet boring. Any downsides to that? Thanks.

And if you forget to downshift it will down shift for you but without rev matching
Every automatic transmission does this, whether single or dual clutch. You'll also see racers with sequential gearboxes perform the same action. It's just a more efficient way of slowing down by sharing the stress on both the brakes and the engine. It's also safer since you have little torque to access if you're on a high gear at a low speed.
I love it and downshift allllll the time. I had bought a 6 speed trans, the revised CSC and was pricing the rest of the tidbits for a complete swap. I fell in love with the paddles during the spirited drives through the corners and sold it all. Its so fun. Not to mention having 2 hands on the wheel at all times is far safer.
In DS mode if you're going like 60 and coming to a stop shortly it'll downshift for you. And give you that "Rev" noise you want. Pretty loud and sounds nice.
But the key is to not slowly slow down or it won't give you that loud noise you want.

It's been proven in competition the brakes alone stop harder than brakes and engine braking together.
That said, I drive everywhere in manual mode. The 7AT will downshift for you and will rev match doing it but the shift point is so low that you barely notice the rev. If you downshift above 2k rpm you'll definitely hear the TCU/ECU rev match. It wastes a little gas but it improves transmission longevity and shift smoothness and sounds awesome with an aftermarket exhaust.

I down shift in DS all the time and it sounds amazing coming from my Ark exhaust, esp when you drop it down in the right rpm range for the gear. Almost has that Rev match feeling and sound to it [dont think these cars have Rev match]

The G37 does indeed have rev matching downshifts, so that is what you're hearing.
