Oil pressure under 11 PSI " Hot" outside temp

He guys got a question,

We know I installed a oil pressure gauge to watch out for the rear gaskets leaking, but I've notice that when the car and outside temp is "hot 80+" the oil pressure is below 11 PSI @ idle, but when the outside temps are in the 60's like this morning even with the car "hot" 45 min drive on the hyw, @ idle the oil pressue is 13-14:/. I've been using 10-30W synthetic oil, should I switch oil to something else? Not sure whats going on here. Thank you

Are pressures any better under load?

Isn't it supposed to be 14 PSI @ idle always? I know when it's "hot" the oil is thinner but that much that it drops like 3-4 PSI and the gauge warning is LOUD! LOL

I have noticed it takes the oil a lot longer to heat up than it does the coolant. My lowest oil pressures at idle take longer than 30 minutes of slow city driving to hit their peaks. Use Torque or something similar to read the oil temp and see if it is the recommended temp for taking oil pressure. I think it requires an add on though to get the oil temps. I can't really compare my idle to yours since my idle is set to 900. At 900 rpm my pressure is 32 highway driving, and 28 city driving.

EDIT: I also have a 32 row oil cooler if that helps comparison.

Was it recommended that you run 10w-30 or was that a personal decision?

Yeah, hot oil idle should be right at 14 PSI.

It wouldn't hurt to change your oil to 5w-30 and see if that helps....

Personal, I was thinking next oil change to go to 5w30 and see what happens

Oil pressure does not change with engine load, only RPM. (assuming oil is at operating temp)

Changing from 10w30 to 5w30 will not make much difference as the oil viscosity at 100 degrees Celsius is almost the same. (for Mobil 1, the 5w30 is about 1 centistoke more: 10.1 vs 11)

I don't think there is anything to worry about, 11 PSI is not far from 14 PSI, assuming the gauge is accurate. You could double check it with an other gauge, like this one: Engine Oil Pressure Test Kit
