Help: Gearswap in 2 weeks...4.08s

As the title states I'm changing my rear gears to 4.08s two weeks from now. Hopefully that will make up for my heavy 20" vossens... I love the rims but they made my car noticeably slower when I out them on. Feels like having another person in the car and a full tank of gas all the time...

So I'm wondering one last thing, well I guess 2 things... I drive a 6mt with 65k miles. Is it necessary to change out the diff bushings and bearings when I do this? It so, is there really a difference between oem replacements and whitelines? Performance wise? Drivability wise?

The shop is Jtran motorsports in Houston. They primarily work on Z's and G's. They said best case scenario it will take 3 hours, worst case 8 hours depending on the condition of the gears and the shim they'll need... Charging $100 an hour, which I've heard $500 and $600 from other shops, so the pricing doesn't seem bad for me. Plus the guy I spoke to was super nice and sounded very knowledgable.

Yes I would change the bearings, seals and bushing when you swap the gears. U can reuse your shims. I did the same thing a longtime ago and still have no issues. But, when I get my TT than I might have to put my stock gears back in.

You really should have them switch out the stock differential bushings for Whitelines.

The OEM bushings are filled with fluid and are prone to rupturing.

Not only that, the Whiteline Polyurethane Bushings will do a better job of dampening the movement/vibrations from the rear differential. It will smooth things out.

I only paid like $95 for the Whiteline Bushings, and another extra $150 (might have been $100?) to have them installed.

If you are on a very tight budget then of course it's not something you HAVE to do.

But it makes sense to spend a little extra now and have everything done the right way the first time.

Just do a search for rear diff bushing failures for G37s and 370Zs and you will see it's a fairly common problem.

And as I said, you'll only be spending another $200 - $250 to have this done.

It's definitely recommended and worth it.

But if you don't have the money to do it now, it won't affect the outcome of the 4.08 install.

Yes, DEFINITELY get new bearings/seals/rebuild kit. That is a must.

So does that mean I should buy this seal and bearing kit:
Nissan rear differential seals and bearings kit - 350z G35 370z G37

PLUS the whiteline bushings for optimal performance and smoothness? Thanks for the info Willco, I definitely want it as smooth as possible. Thanks to everyone else too!

Yep, that's it.

Just check with the shop first before sourcing and buying all the parts yourself.

They might be able to get everything cheaper for you as a package deal.

That's what I did. I had Specialty-Z order everything before I drove down for the install.

I literally just drove down, dropped the car off overnight, and drove back home the next day.

But your shop might be busy and prefer that you source and purchase all the parts. Just call em.

Got a stillen gen 3 set on the way in the mail, and I just ordered my gears, rebuild kit, and whiteline bushings... Idk if I'm overexcited or scared of dropping so much $$$ lol!

Well... the parts are already ordered so just look forward to the install
plus I'm pretty sure it'll put a huge grin on your face every time you punch the go paddle.

night and day difference. also little to no wheel hop? bruh... u r gonna feel elated. and you're gonna be shifting a lot more .... it like it wakes it up.... with those gears, the car constantly asking for more.... or it could be the adrenaline rush talking. lol.
