5 A/T drain and refill?
5 A/T drain and refill?
What's up everyone. After some searches and stuff, I still can't a solid answer. I went to the dealer today for am oil change, and that went smooth but on the paper I received from the advisor it says "recommend rear diff service" and "a/t drain and refill". I have. 08 g37s with 73,012 miles. Is it time that I change those fluids? I don't wanna fork over money without having to do so...so if anyone could chime in with some info I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

I have an 08 with the a/t I changed mines evey year once it got passed 60K, but its recommended to change it every 30K. I have 89K now. I also changed the diff oil at 60K. I drive mines pretty hard and I put about 20K miles a year so I usually change these items every year just to keep every thing clean. I also change both pcv every year also and clean them half way through the year.
many guys on here, myself included, go with 30k differential fluid swaps since it is so cheap and quick to do. if the diff fluid has never been changed they yes, i suggest doing that soon. it's an easy DIY, or any trusted independent shop can do this. you do not need to go to the dealer for such a straightforward routine maintenance item. dealer will do a fine job, but at twice the price and only using Nissan fluids. many guys here prefer to use aftermarket diff fluids like Redline, Amsoil, Motul, etc...
not sure about the AT fluids since i'm 6MT.

not exactly sure if the 5at is like this (hopefully not and you can be spared!) but the 7at requires a Consult III tool for a proper drain/fill procedure, fluid needs to get to a certain temp which the Consult III tool monitors to get the proper amount back in the transmission. on top of that, it is a bottom fed inlet hole and you can fashion something that might make due but prob leak and you can even go buy the pump / filler tube they use at the dealer, but it doesn't seem worth it. Someone on here last Fall purchased the tool and I was thinking of reaching out and seeing if could rent it from them, but then you're left needing a Consult III to make sure the tranny fluid temp is right at 40 degrees Celsius (it does matter). A few people on here have circumvented the bottom feed/inlet for refilling the trans by utilizing the intake feed line that goes to the transmission cooler more towards the front, which makes sense to me-- still left needing a Consult III. smdh
This is one procedure I am leaving in the hands of the dealer. I shopped around (Nissan does the exact same procedure for 370z's) and made sure the dealer / service dept rep sounded like they had a clue of what I was talking about. 1x drain / fill every 30-35k miles... if I was in your shoes, I'd be looking towards a 3x drain/refill (they literally cycle through and repeat the process three times as only a third can possibly drain out of what's being held in the transmission. It's tedious and time consuming... 1x drain / fill usually runs $125-175 to give you some basis on total cost (that includes fluid which isn't cheap $8-11 a quart). so with a 3x drain/fill procedure, you still are mixing with old fluid but in the end you should have about %85 new fluid. So much for a lifetime / 'sealed' transmission that never needs serviced..LOL what a farce. It's beyond me why they state that in owner's material, but yet in the factory service manuals completely spell out the drain/fill procedure and intervals that it should be done by.
As others have stated, the differential fluid drain and fill is simple and a straightforward DIY. It takes more time to get your car jacked up and stands under it.

They're full of crap and clearly have never checked the service manual for your car. Why would the service manual outline the procedure to check and change the transmission fluid if it's not meant to be changed? lol It's the same line BMW tells their owners, 'sealed for life'.
If they're willing to give you an extended warranty on your current transmission and guarantee it for the duration of your ownership-- putting that all down in writing-- I'd be more apt to believe them. The will never do that and you will be the one on the hook for a new transmission after the internal wear and tear happens (after normal use) after about the 65-75k mile mark. Call other dealers and inquire about transmission fluid drain and fills. Nissan is capable of doing them as well.
