I believe it's time to replace my wheel bearings on the G. At first I thought the loud noise was an alignment or tires issue, but it turns at the the wheel bearings are going bad. I only hear the loud road noise at 60+ mphs, so I have been doing some research on replacing my wheel bearings. I looked around and searched through the forum, but I have not found anything definitive on which brand to use. There are the Timkens and the Beck/Arnley versions that seem to be as close to OEM. However, I was wondering if there are others that have been used with success. Any comments/suggestions/recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Really enjoy driving the G and it's totally different from all the muscle cars I have had, but this noise is aggravating.

 

Is there a reason you are looking to get something other than oem?

 

There was a back order at the local dealer and it would take a couple of weeks to get them in, but other than that no reason.

 

I used Timkens when i had to replace my hub/wheel bearing assembly. Went in easy enough, and no issues since...

 

Timken wheel bearings have always been good quality. I've installed them several times in the past on various cars and never had to replace them.

 

I saw Timken's on the website as well. Good to hear they are off good quality, and can serve as a contingency if the OEM's are not in stock. Thanks for the replies.

 

How hard of a job am I looking at? I saw a couple of writeups and even a video for an 06, and it didn't look too difficult however, I haven't seen anything for the 08s and up for a writeup. Is there anyone that has done this job, or have insight on what to expect?

 

Wheel bearings are pretty straightforward on a RWD car.


Hydraulic press will make your life easier but I've done it with a small sledge and cold chisels, too...

 

I am seeming to start thinking my wheel bearings need to be replaced.. However, my G has 30K on the odometer... seems a little early for wheel bearings??????

I just had new tires installed and then next day i hear this load roar/buzzing sound i assumed it was the new tires... any input would be appreciated.. Thanks.

 

Hard to diagnose from here, but it's easy for you; just jack up the car and try to wobble your wheels.


If they do wobble you have a problem; take off the tire(s) and look to see what is loose; if they don't wobble you are probably OK.


BTW, any decent garage will do this N/C.


FWIW, I had a 2002 Infiniti G20 and the front driver's side bearing gave out at about 25K, so anything's possible.

Thanks for the information. I have an AWD and I saw a couple of links on the web, but none of them describe the AWD installation. Would it be similar to the RWD installation? I have the Timkens ready for install and should be doing it soon.

 

I just had the front left wheel bearing replaced (under warranty) on a 2011 G37x at 32K miles. The symptoms were an increasingly loud hum/buzzing sound at speeds above 50 mph.
When at speed, the noise was louder when the steering wheel was turned to the right and quieter when turned to the left. Noise is gone now (after replacement).
