Broke rear axle shaft..?

I went over a railroad track to fast this morning and lost the ability to grab any gear. When I put it in gear and release the clutch it barely rolls and and sounds like grinding..maybe rear end area..very hard to tell.

..well, as I was typing the shop just called. Seems like it broke the rear drivers side axle shaft at the cvt joint. Easy fix, but part is a bit hard to find in my town. Dealer wants $600 for the shaft - looking at aftermarket.

Anyone have any upgrade ideas for me while I'm swapping the axle shafts at the moment?

Whiteline diff bushings, or a 4.08 gear swap while the pumpkin is off the car, maybe a Z1 aluminum driveshaft.

I had a similar issue (sort of, but not really). The splines on my axle shaft that go into the hub/wheel bearing, and the splines on the hub basically rusted out. So the power was going all the way through the axle shaft but since the splines were rusted out, it would just spin inside of the hub. I ended up not getting the entire axle shaft, I only got the portion of the shaft that had the splines and CV joint. I also obviously had to get a new hub/wheel bearing.

You may want to just confirm with the shop that what i just described isnt happening. I couldnt see why a BROKEN axle shaft would cause really bad grinding (i guess it depends on how it broke). But the grinding I had when this situation happened was TERRIBLE.

As far as upgrades. i believe I saw something somewhere about aftermarket axle shafts, but since I didnt end up going that route, I dont recall where. Maybe concept Z... I'm not sure.

Yeah - I saw https://www.myg37.com/forums/engine-...t-options.html .. but pretty much stated no axle upgrades...still trying to search though.

I think he said since the drivers side was busted at the joint, the grinding I was hearing was the passenger side trying to engage but not working..independent but they play off each other and are required to turn the rear end. . honestly I was to upset to really understand the full experience because truth out, the WRX kept going and I was parked on the side of the road. lol I think the rear wheels were air borne and came down underload...thus the wheel hop snapped the shaft at the cv type joint

Well if you were street racing you got what you deserved IMO. If I misunderstood your last comment, my apologies.

I broke an axle too, but it was at the drag strip where shenanigans are supposed to take place. I checked on upgraded axles a long time ago but if you are complaining about $600 for the OEM one you don't even want to know what upgrades will cost.

Find a used one. It'll be much cheaper. I think I paid $100.

You're welcome.

Not really racing. I was keeping pace with the wrx up to the light and I stopped. Across the intersection was the train tracks but as I'm a jeep driver I often forget in lower and so I hit the tracks about 30mph. Not any slamming or street grinding but my wide tires rubbed the wheel wells. I think the jolt was big enough that it hopped the wheels off the ground and popped me forward. Thus hitting the gas causing more torque… I was off the throttle and on the clutch as quick as I hit it but it was to late. I have found a few in Dallas used and new but not much in Tulsa yet. Still searching but thanks for the links and help. Still a bit in shock. The $600 is fine but I've done a lot of shafts in jeeps that were much bigger and chromo hardened and such and a single shaft usually gets up there but not stock. Hehe I'll get use to it eventually.

OIC. Not really racing per se, but just driving spiritedly across the tracks fast enough to bottom out the suspension and launch the rear end of the car completely off the ground while keeping pace with another car. Gotcha. Stuff happens.

How much cheaper tan $100 for a $600 part are you searching for? If you find once cheaper, let us know where. The repair itself isn't difficult.

I wasn't looking for cheaper than $100 - in fact, I meant that if it was $600, I'd be fine with that but had hoped at that price it would be an upgrade and not stock. Money isn't an issue until it's more like a few grand...like if the tranny exploded..I might not like that all to well. My pace keeping was before the tracks - I had already proven that his WRX couldn't keep up and we were done - I was just normal driving across the intersection but the tracks were way worse than I expected and I should have stopped to go over them and instead just drove right over them. It doesn't take much to launch the wheels off the ground in a short throw suspension - you know that. I'm not trying to argue that it wasnt' my fault - I take full responsibility - I was just looking for opportunites as I always do that if I have to get into something - I might as well look at what's available to upgrade at the same time. I'm not going to defend my driving style any beyond this - I drive hard and play hard and it bites me sometimes. I'm fully prepared for that, was just thinking this was forum to discuss the car and what things can be improved/upgraded or if anyone else had any similar experiences...maybe they could give me advice on a few other items I should check out as well. I've been eyeballing the 4.09 upgrade but since I don't really have to get in and mess with the rear end - I may hold off on that...Great point out on the Whiteline Diff bushings ... been reading about those and actually found some in town I may look into.

Went to the shop to take a look this morning - actually didn't break the axle itself - it was the housing where it bolts up to the rear end...it was cracked into many pieces. Starting to think it may have had damage from the PO and there really was no way to tell until it took another torque hit and gave way. I'll get some pictures..learned a lot looking at how this sets up though..and staring at 370z vs g37s shafts etc...look to be the same to me. My Fedex guy hasn't made it with my new shaft yet...so looks like I'll be down thru the weekend waiting on this part. Only myself to blame...driving the old Prelude is like being in a gocart with no suspension compared to the G. lol

Wait... the part of the axle shaft that bolts up, or the pumpkin?

it seems that breaking the axle shaft itself would be almost impossible unless you had some built torque monster. I believe mine broke the cage, hard to remember. I may have pics of it somewhere.
