How to Swap and Replace Defective Automatic Floor Shifter?

I've been in pains trying to find some info on how to swap out my defective 5AT floor shifter for a working unit. I have an automatic, 2008 G37 S coupe.

Like some of the automatic owners out there, my floor shifter is defective as it will not stay in DS or manual mode when asked to. Like others, the same symptoms: put lever in DS mode, doesn't stay in mode and reverts back to regular drive mode; sometimes the DS mode doesn't even come on when lever is switched to DS.
I've been trying to find a write-up on instructions for a swap but have not found any. The closest I've found is a write-up that describes how to remove the bezel from the floor shifter, but nothing on how to remove the shifter itself and then swapping in another shifter.

I live in Toronto and Willowdale Infiniti quoted me at around $800 for the part and install. I asked why it's so much and the service rep. stated that they would have to "drop the transmission". I was a little dumbfounded as this is an automatic we're talking about.

Anyways, if somebody can provide me instructions or direct me to information on swapping the old floor shifter for a working one, Please Let Me Know!!!

*Additionally, can anybody tell me whether the floor shifters are interchangeable between years and models? If so, which would be compatible with my 2008 5AT?*

Thanks

Not sure how close the coupe is to the sedan, but it is VERY easy on the sedan and you shouldn't have to drop the tranny.

The general steps:

1) Put the front end on ramps, make sure it is in park, then go under and disconnect the shifter linkage. Easy to do this on your back.

2) Go into car and remove the bezel.

3) Remove electrical connectors and the 4 bolts holding the shifter assembly to the trans tunnel, then pull out the shifter.

4) Reverse steps to install

5) Think about what to do with the $800 you just saved

The hardest part was putting my lowered sedan onto the ramps. The whole project took me about an hour going slow. You'll be able to do it in under 30 minutes after the first time.

Much appreciated Terry!

Can I ask what year is your G? Did you swap out your shifter with another from the same year?
I am wondering if the shifters are interchangeable between different models and years with our G's. If so, it'll offer me a wider range to pick from.

Thanks!

Mine was a 2007. I replaced it with a new one bought from the dealership.

I would recommend buying a new one because the failure is always on the printed circuit board built into the shifter assembly. It's never been the little micro switches from all the threads I've seen on this topic.

In my opinion, if you don't get a new one ... you never know how much longer the used one you just bought will last. And those darn things go out often enough that the dealer keeps them in inventory too.

Good advice. I'm going to call the dealerships and get a few quotes. Something tells me it may run $400+ though...
However, I'm not sure about installing it myself as I've had bad experiences lifting up my own car. I'll probably have my mechanic do it who'll surely be cheaper than the dealership.

It's been a while since anyone posted but since I swapped one out this morning on my 09 A/T convertible, I thought I would share a few tips and observations:
- I have average skills and the job was easier than I expected - 2 hrs going very slowly.
- I followed the service manual instructions but didn't have to remove the entire center console
- When you remove the control rod, there are a couple of loose washers than can fall off (I didn't notice them until reconnecting the control rod)
- You want to be in Park for removing/attaching the control rod, in Drive for removing/replacing the console finisher (there is a white button on the shifter that you press to change from Park to Drive)
- I only had to remove the rear upper console assembly afterwards in order to remove the shifter
- I believe the job can be done in under an hour
