2012 Auto Transmission

Hi.

I have been shopping around looking for a newer car. I'm currently driving a 2000 Maxima. Nice car but it's time to move on.

I live in the Phoenix AZ area and I'm looking at a 2012 Infiniti G37 sedan. My wife would like to use my car as a backup
alternative, this means 4 doors and a auto transmission.

The G37 has good performance with some good interior features installed for a car of this class (better than most). It also
appears to be a reliable auto. I would like this to be my next car.

The one questions I have is about the auto transmission lag problem. I have read most of the threads posted here regarding
the transmission problems experienced by the 2009, 2010 & 2011 models and very little is commented about the 2012 model.

The specific car that I'm looking at the first title issued was 03/30/2012 and the software update for the 2009, 2010, 2011
and the 2012 convertible models was 8/29/2012 (ITB12-027c). This update occurred 5 months after this car first title was issued.

Can I assume that the 2012 G37 transmission is equivalent to a 2011 model with the update installed?

Are the 2012 model year owners experiencing any issues?

Thanks in advance Al

Ive had my '12xS for about 9 months and have had no issues with my transmission. Very smooth shifts and is responsive during down and up shifts. Great during spirited driving. In the city under "D" the car also doesnt seem to have any issues with lag either.

Thanks for the feedback,

Here is a link to one of the cars I hope to look at this weekend.

Anything else should I look for besides the transmission issue?

Have had my 12xS since Feb 2012. Overall transmission is ok, but IMO it doesn't do well at all in city driving or in the 30-40 mph range, as it always seems to be in too high of a gear and when you have to slow down you have to give it a lot of pedal to speed back up. Also it is doesn't react well when you are turning at low speed and then try to speed up, particularly when goinguphill, without having to somewhat floor the pedal.

I would be most concerned about the transmission to be honest. My brother also has a '12x but his transmission doesn't seem as smooth as mine. Has the same issues NickyF was talking about. Make sure you go for a long test drive to make sure everything is ok.

Just an FYI for the 2012 owners, there is a transmission update they can apply to the car. My car was manufactured Nov 2011 (it's a 2012 model), I asked them to make sure I had the latest transmission software at my last service visit. They were surprised to see that I didn't and updated it.

For the first week it was absolutely perfect, so much more responsive and drove like I thought it always should have. After about 500 miles it's not as good as when they first updated it (transmission learning driving style I guess), but it's still a lot better than before.

If you're not happy with your 2012's transmission take it in and try out the updated software.

alb,

IMHO the 7AT issues, even in my non-updated 2009, are more of a nuisance than a serious problem. It is a bit slow to downshift, and occasionally may downshift to a specific gear and then suddenly decide to drop one more gear, which seems a bit schizophrenic. If you expect it to be 100% consistent (i.e. you do action "A" and always get result "B"), it's not. I've gotten used to it, though. I'm a pretty docile driver 95% of the time. The other 5% time is random instances where I expect the car to be ultra responsive and go like hell. Pretty hard for a learning program to deal with two distinct styles like that. BTW, I did not have my firmware updated because I drove an updated loaner and I prefer the firmer shifts with the original program.

The lag in the paddle shifters is also a nuisance, but that doesn't apply to a journey.

Also of note, my wife, who has a pretty non-aggressive driving style, sees no issue at all with the transmission. She doesn't like the driver's sport seat, but that's another subject and not issue with a Journey.

The tranny on my brand new 12 G is still seems to be kind of jerky and can't find the right gear even at 8k miles. It is terrible on local especially when you're at low speeds and you want that 328 ponies to kick in, you get caught flat footed...

Definitely take the car out for a long drive on both the freeway and side streets. I was also concerned about the tranny after reading the multitude of complaints on this forum, but when I took my 2011 out for its test drive, I simply couldn't duplicate any of the complaints. (It has the 027 update)

Mind you I'm an old guy, so lightning fast shifts and nanosecond throttle response wasn't at the top of my list of concerns. Actually, I was more interested in a transmission that wasn't always downshifting every time I touched the gas pedal like some of the GM cars I've owned. I think it's prefect.

Also, notice the car you linked is a base G37, not the Journey. No sunroof, Bose stereo, seat memory, maybe some other minor differences I'm not aware of. The Journey package was about a $2K upgrade, hence the low price for your '12.
