white smoke

Just curious. i'm looking atg a 2010 g37s coupe, with 29,000 miles. when i start it up, white smoke comes out like a cloud. if you rev the motor up, it comes out again. any idea what that is? i'm thinking head gasket. any input would be great. thanks

White smoke is usually water in the exhaust. The car should be covered by factory warranty, but if there is any question I would leave it. I would absolutely call in the VIN to ensure that the warranty is still in effect.

no matter what the issue is, i would walk away from it and look at another car. its not worth the trouble buying a used car that was someone else's problem

What's the ambient temp? It could be water vapor in the exhaust or it could be burning coolant as Jsolo is referring to which is sweet smelling. If it's colder outside, the water vapor will be more noticeable than if it's warmer. If it's warm and you're still seeing white smoke, waft some of it for the scent. Any sweet smelling, walk away. Most likely it's just vapor.

I agree with Swiss & Jsolo...
The Scent of coolant is obvious. Sweet smell and its a steady vapor, not sure of your location like Swiss said but sounds like water vapor.
29k is not a lot of miles yet it being a 10 sounds like a Lease return...

What did Infiniti find? I have the same problem on the first start of the day for about 10 seconds, after that it goes away and on subsequent starts nothing.

guys, it's just vapour being pushed through the system. all cars with internal combustion engines produce it. as was said above, ambient temps affect how much, or for how long, ""white smoke" is visible upon cold start-ups or revving of the engine. once the engine has warmed up there should be little to no "smoke" at warmer climates.

this is a non-issue. coolant leaks (head gasket issue) are much more obvious, and will not go away after a few seconds upon cold start up.

Thanks for posting up Canucklehead! I didn't think it was a problem, but when I seen the concern, I thought that I may have a valve seal problem.

^^ LOL

To the OP - how thick is the "smoke"? Does is have the density of your breath on a semi-cold day (nearly transparent) OR cloudy (thick and opaque). The latter would be reason to walk away.

Mine has done this since day 1 and is obviously water. I say this because, I can see it settle on the bumper above and almost immediately evaporates. It also smells like "exhaust"... at least, for the brief time I was concious while trying to sniff it.

GL!

I would cross that one off the list. Even after it was repaired.
