P0174 Code

UPDATE 1-2-2013: FIXED
So I cleaned my throttle bodies and wow what a difference. I following the DIY on here and it was a simple process. It took longer to move my strut bar, engine cover and intakes than it did to clean the TB's. I figured I would have a high idle after I cleaned them, which I did. So I performed all the relearns and ECU resets and so far my car runs like a champ. Better than it ever has. No drop in idle and silky smooth. Thanks everyone

Well I got my first check engine light yesterday..I'm sitting it stopped traffic, light sprinkling rain, about 60 outside. I hear a small faint "burp" type sound that seemed to come from the exhaust. I looked up and now I had a check engine light and my idle had gone up to 1,100 rpm and was a little rough. I had it checked at it was a P0174 which basically meant the system was running too lean. The only mod I have are the Stillen G3's. No tune. Car is an 08 with 36,000 miles. I always get gas from the same place and always run premium. I seen another thread on here having the same code but he had more mods than me so I could see where he got the code from. Could my intakes be letting more air in than it should be? Bad MAF sensor? I've had these intakes on for almost a year now.

Your best bet is to have your MAFs checked, you can also use an external lambda sensor to measure your AF ratio to double check.

I'm new to the Infiniti game, but I know my Subie WRX didn't like having a CAI without a tune...go get a tune. I threw a couple CELs in that car until I got it tuned. OR...remove the Stillen since you already know that's your only mod.

check your clamps at the throttle bodies. Make sure MAF sensors connectors are tight. Check the tubing to the PCV valve or baffle is not cracked and check the clamps there as well.

Yeah I defiantly need a tune. That's probably the main problem.

I just cleaned both MAF's and cleared my light. So far so good with no lights.

Thanks for your help guys. I'll post if that doesn't fix it.

Ive ran intakes since day 1 and never had a CEL from them. Im now running gen 3's, with test pipes and full catback and the car is running like a champ. I do plan on getting it tuned very soon but overall im happy with the performance. DO you have the water shields on your intakes?

Update

A little update on my problem as I've done some research and testing. I've had the Gen 3 intakes for a year now with zero issues; but now all of a sudden I'm seeing problems Here is what I've came up with:

I drive my G everyday a maximum of 10 minutes a day. No more than 60 mph and shift at 3k. To and from work. Every now and then I will get on it pretty hard going home or to work but nothing for a long period of time. Here lately I've been driving about 40 miles into Lexington. It takes me about an hour to get there and speeds ranging from 65-80 with the cruise on. Shifts over 3-4k sometimes. When I get into Lexington I always run into stopped or very slow traffic. Sitting still for 5-10 minutes at a time, idling.

The first time I went to Lexington I hit some heavy traffic and my light came on. The idle drop three times in about a minute and after the third time, a light. The following Monday I cleaned both MAF's and cleared the light. Zero issues throughout the week under it's normal driving conditions.

Go to Lexington again. Same thing happens. Hit heavy traffic at a stop light. Idle drops about three times and then the light comes on.

So this past weekend I watched my idle every time I came to a stop and when it would drop the first time I was give it some gas and raise the idle up to 1,100 rpm. I did this all weekend, every time the idle made that first drop and my light never came on once.

What I think is going on is my car is used to driving at low speeds, no traffic and for a short period of time. Now I'm going to high speeds, which equals greater air flow into the intakes for a much longer period of time. And then into heavy traffic. I believe that the long unnatural driving is throwing off my MAF's and setting a P0174 and P0171 code.

I have came up with a couple of different ways to solve this issue.

1. Take off the intakes and put the stocks back on. Which I don't want to do because I like them but they should not be giving my this problem.

2. Get a tune. Which I would like to do but I can't right now. Again, I shouldn't have to get a tune for just intakes.

Sorry for the lengthy post and thanks for reading. Can anyone chime in on what I just said?? Thoughts??

If your idle is dipping, you might want to give cleaning your TB's a try.

I was actually thinking about this as well because it idles a little rough on a cold start. Our TB's get dirty easily.

You might also want to try and clean your MAF if that is the code being thrown.
