09 G37 tapping after oil change....Help!!

Hello,

I just did my first oil change on my used 2009 G37x.
The oil was changed by the previous owner about 2.5K ago
but the oil looked dirty so I changed it. The car has 21K on the odometer.
The filter I took off was genuine Nissan but I don't know what oil was in it.

I used Pennzoil Platinum 5W30, 5.2 quarts with a new K&N oil
filter. Right after the oil change (as soon as I first started the engine)
I noticed a knock or tapping sound at low RPMs not noticeable much at idle
but very noticeable when I give it a little gas.

It's not the oil filter. The noise is to the rear of the oil pan. Sounds like marbles rattling. Any help much appreciated.
Should I take it to the dealer since I have full coverage? Can they void my warranty for using non Nissan oil and filter?

That's exactly what it sounds like! But why immediately after an oil change???

I used Rhino Ramps so I did not touch anything else but the filter and oil plug.

This sound was never there before. I am certain of that much.

do you hear the noise while in neutral, or while the car is moving? does the noise go away after the clutch pedal is pushed all the way in? if you hear the noise while you drive you might not have tightened the plastic shield tight enough and it could be flapping around while you drive. If the noise goes away while you engage the clutch at neutral its the notorious throw out bearing rattle. If that fails have you checked to see that the oil is completely topped off and is a 5w30? keep us posted

Hi, it's me again.

My noise never went away so I changed the oil AGAIN after only 500 miles. This time I used Mobil One with a Mobil One filter.

No change, I still have the noise. I read something about a TSB for
the 2008 G37 but nothing for my 2009. I sure would appreciate some advice. It's not the gas, I used all Super from different gas stations.

I had tapping issues with mine but not like what you're describing (marbles rattling). It was the VVEL bank 2 actuator TSB and after my dealership worked on it twice, the noise is gone and hasn't returned.

Maybe previous owner dumped in some sort of oil thickener to quiet it down for the sale?

Take it to a dealer to get it checked out. You will not get the warranty voided for not using a Nissan filter. As long as it's a filter designed specifically for the G37 by the manufacturer, you are good.

I purchased the car certified from an Infiniti dealer with full warranty.
I would hope they would have checked the car with their 100+ check points although they did not change the oil since it was only 1K before it was
traded in.
My son bought a certified 2010 G37 2 weeks later and I found the air filters
filthy. I told the salesman I did not believe in their certification check list!
It seems to be just a gimmick!

Maybe the prior owner did it to trade it in? Hope not though.

They Found The Problem!

I took it to the dealer and they checked it out and ordered two new
catalytic convertors for it.

Mattster was right about my just not noticing it before.

I never heard of replacing cats at 21K miles but at least it's
free of charge. The parts alone would probably cost a couple hundred bucks or more!

Thank you all for your help and advice. I like it here! I just need to find
where they keep the cooler with the beer!
