knocking from motor..

So today i noticed a strange knocking that sounds like it may be the lifters.. my car only has 4,800 miles on it so not too sure what could have gone wrong... It has a service tomorrow for an oil change, do you guys think it could just be low on oil or should i tell the techs to check it out as well?

There is no fathomable reason why you wouldn't ask them to check it out. That's what warranty service is for. So the answer is yes tell them to check it out. There is no downside to this.

i'm not an expert -- but typically knock comes from retardation in timing. did you accidentally put in 87 octane?

and also you're probably having lots of dirt in your motor from dirty oil. have you seen the posts on the oil filters? there's only so much dirt it can hold

had my check up, service techs said its all normal sounds when the oil is low, also said that if i wanted synthetic the lifer/timing belt noise would go down, but that it is a normal thing on the G37.. so alls good

you shouldve requested an oil consumption test if you were running low, or change your service intervals...

Our car does not HAVE a timing belt. It has a timing chain, which doesn't need to be changed like a belt does. If you took it to the dealer and the service rep didn't know this, I'd switch dealers. Fast. They're either liars or idiots... neither of which is good.

Secondly, if you want a cheap synthetic oil change, PM me. I think I live close to you. We'll go to Walmart, grab a 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 and a new filter and I'll show you how to do it yourself in 15 minutes... for about $35. I have a 2011 myself and I dumped the stock oil for synthetic at 3,000 miles. Never heard a peep from the engine.

Hey were are you MACS? I'd totally like to get in on that oil change tutorial. I hate to admit that I've never changed my own oil, but I haven't. It would be cool to do it with someone for the first time. I'm in OC.

I'm in Temecula. I'm free this Sunday and we could meet at the Walmart off of Temecula Pkwy. I might be a little hung over (not sure how many beers I will drink after work tomorrow) but I've done worse than an oil change with a little headache. LOL!

Noon would suit me fine, if you guys are down for it. 5qt's of Mobil 1, plus filter will run you about $35. I have ramps and I'll do the changing and teaching for free dollars and ninety nothing cents. (that's free)
