Different gas stations vs miles per gallon

Hi there I have been checking on my G37s mpg
mostly people are getting 18-20 mpg traveling in 50/50 freeway and city

I live in L.A and usually refuel with chevron and shell,
I always refuel in the middle quality gas, its 89 i believe?

I did some calculations and find out that my car tend to get 1-2 mpg more when I use chevron, around 18 mpg, however when i use shell, i usually get 16-17 mpg. (I drive in the same attitude, sometimes i accelerate pretty hard on freeways)

My question is, does anyone here overcame a situation like this? I am not trying to dig at shell but I really did calculate it and the result is pretty obvious (being known that my daily routes are home->school->home->dinner. I always fill the tank full when it is around 80% empty)

I have also used 76 and arco and will try to compare them later.

Tell me what you guys think? do you think it is a coincidence?

ps. I do love Shell! and sorry for my bad english!

In order to be the most accurate without completely overfilling the tank, you would have to fill at the same station twice and use the second tank to gauge a rough snapshot of mpg. Each pump will click off at a different level, within each station and even more between brands. Manual calculation is usually the best method.

However, I have found my trip computer is good to within about 0.3 mpg, so huge variations can been seen on it.

I also don't understand why people don't use 91+. Maybe a different definition of required?

Did he really say 76??? What the hell is that. . Um trade your car and buy a Civic.
UM I only use 93 Shell or Sunoco and get 17 MPG 90% city driving. BUT REALLY 76???? Is that even considered gas..

I agree, shell IMO is the way to go. Though cheveron works too if there aren't any shells around. (At least thats what I hear, never really used it extensively myself)

I find Shell 91 gives me better mileage than any other brands 91. Unfortunately 94 is only available at sunoco and now petro Canada (I live in Toronto) but, get worse mpg with it. I don't notice much of a power difference so stick to shell 91.

Some gas stations have ethanol in their gas regardless of octane rating. I know shells 91 has no ethanol and that too is reason enough for me. From what I understand, ethanol is not good for the engine. I have not done much research on this so it could be speculation.

I stay away from any "cheap" gases like Costco etc.

Don't understand why a $60k (CAD price for my coupe with taxes in) car deserves any less.

No Union 76 stations in New England?? Surely though you have seen NASCAR fans / races from before Sunoco took over. Union 76 was their fuel sponsor for many years.

To get a good test, use math, not your trip computer. Also part of your difference could be the gas pump, not actually the gas. Each pump will have a different definition of full when it shuts off. If you want to get carried away, remember that temperature makes a difference too since gas expands.
