Question No Ester Oil available!!

Hi all!

I went to my regular 30K oil changed this saturday and my Infiniti dealer told me that there were no ester oil available (apparently, not availabe across Canada since this product would come from Japan and it is backorder).

so, they put mobil one instead. What I find funny here, is that that dealer used to tell me to put Ester since my engine might overheat otherwise and also make more noise... Now that Ester is no more available as we speak, mobil one now looks ok!!!

should I worry with mobil one?

Thanks!!!

Daniel

Most Infiniti dealers don't use an Ester oil when servicing your G, unless you ask for it. The main reason it is recommended by Infiniti is to quiet the engine if the customer complains about excessive noise.

From quick oil analysis surveys and anecdotal evidence it seems like people have good luck with the German Mobil 1, Castrol Synthetic, and Penzoil Ultra Synthetic along with using a quality (non-Fram filter) like Pure1 or K&N.

Between Autozone, Advance, and O'Reilly, someone has quality oil+filter on sale every month for under $30.

Sounds like your dealer found a quick way to make some extra money off of you. Ester oil has nothing to do with overheating and is only used if a customer complains about a "ticking" noise from the VVEL system. Using it isn't bad but it's not necessary.

Some of the best UOAs I have ever seen in the G37 are from Pennzoil Platinum and Eneos, both 5W-30. PureOne is an excellent filter.

Go with Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra, PureOne filter, and never look back!

Mobil 1 is very good. I changed oil at 500 miles to Mobil 1 and noticed a definite quieting of the valve train noise.
