Engine revved by itself

OK. Last night I'm dropping off some friends with the car in park. All of a sudden the rpm's start to steadily increase. I'm not touching anything. It was a consistent steady climb and when it got up around 2500 (and still climbing) I shut the car off. Restarted it and it was back to normal. Also no probs going to work this morning. Dealer is looking at it this afternoon. I have had the occasional "flaring" issue but never anything like this. I'm just glad I wasn't in drive when this happened. (Toyota anyone). The car is 2009 G37X with 9k. Anyone else experience this?

If anyone else experiences this, please try the following so the endless speculation can be truncated:

1) if you are in gear/drive, put the car in neutral and make sure you are safe...then pay attention to what the engine does by itself. Don't turn the car off, just let it do its thing and monitor what it does. If it is screaming at the redline for many seconds and doesn't look like it is going to stop, then shut off the engine.

2) if you are in park, like Raider, don't touch the throttle, but try dabbing the brake pedal to see if resets the throttle (it should). Otherwise let it go as in 1) above.

We need to determine if the rpms will just keep climbing until the engine computer intervenes and whether activation of the brake has any effect. Depending on the answers, we can establish how real this is (as opposed to the overwhelming likelihood that people are pressing the wrong pedal...yes, even in Toyota's) and if it is a software issue (happens even when the application of the brake pedal should disengage the throttle no matter what else is happening). If it is software, then absolutely no questions asked the cars should be recalled a la Toyota. Except there won't be a mechanical solution as there is with Toyota throttles, so Nissan/Infiniti will need to be first convinced that they better hurry up and figure out the source of the problem and then hurry up and figure out a solution--otherwise, we will have recalled cars with nothing to replace them or will be told to stop driving them (despite simply shifting to neutral solving all problems, apparently that is beyond the capability of North American drivers).

Don't get too worried yet. One person experiencing problems normally points to a single defective part unique to his vehicle -- not the kind of wide-scale problem that would necessitate a recall.

I'm not sure that there is just one person with this issue. Reading through the different threads, it seems that I can find 4-6 different people with this 'type' of issue.

I wouldn't call it an issue. All we have are some threads with people saying that the engine seemed to rev by itself.

I would also add that if you can get out of the car and record it with yoru camera phone. Show that the vehicle is in park, nothing is on the gas pedal and yet the engine continues to rev.

I know that's a lot easier to say than do but it would eliminate a lot of doubt and force Nissan to sit up and take notice.

Car is still at the dealership. They are keeping it overnight. As I suspected there were no fault codes. I can assure you I was not touching the gas pedal when this was happening. It was increasing rpm's at a consistent very "computer controlled" like rate. It actually struck me how evenly and smoothly the rpm's were increasing. There is absolutely no way to record this unless you know its coming. We are talking a few seconds here and there is no way I'm letting my 40k plus car possibly redline just so I can try and record it because of some doubting poster on this site.

I dont think he was saying to videotape it because he is doubting you, the poster. He was stating if you had it on video, Infiniti could not say it was not happening. Cause tomorrow when the dealership calls you, they are going to say we were not able to reproduce the problem, so the car is fine! Typical dealership response...

This could be ECU or other electronic interference.. just a guess.. The dealer might not be able to reproduce the problem, so the best shot is to try to reproduce it with the exact same environment as when you were dropping off your friends. were any of them using their cell phone?

Got the G back today and as we all expected they couldn't find any fault codes or issues. Their best explanation was some electronic glitch between the TCM and the ECM where the signal or command for idle somehow didn't register properly. In other words they have no clue. Please note I am not bashing my dealership. In fact I would highly recommend them. I just have to wait and see if it happens again. No one was using their cell phones at the time either. They did check and made sure all my software was up to date.

Same issue i called infiniti corporate

HEY GUYS I HAD THE SAME ISSUE.Hi,

i just leased a new 2009 G37X COUPE BLACKon saturday.. i noticed that saturday at one instance i was stopped at a red light with my foot firmly on brake at 0mph and it suddenly revved up to 1500 rpm, all the while, the car was in regular d mode WITHOUT my foot even close to the gas pedal... i threw it into neutral did nothing, i threw it into park, did nothing. i then shut it off.. restarted car it was fine. last night (tuesday) i was going to the store.. i got to store braked to 0 and then put car into Park and it suddenly revved for 2-3 seconds to 4000 rpm then backed off without my foot on accelerator at all and foot firmly on brake. i am very scared for my life now. i took the car in on saturday, dealer said "everything is fine". i called them again today to see what they can do. they said the 2009 cars include the update from the 2008 cars. i called corporate infiniti to see if they can replace the car for me or what options i can take, someone will get back to me tomorrow at the latest. i am scared to drive it. i love the car just wish it wouldnt do this. what do i do? whos had these problems. why is it doing this.<!-- google_ad_section_end --> I am now waiting on regional specialist to get back to me. The dealer is taking a look at my car and having someone from "factory" come check it out. <!-- / message -->

Sounds like exactly what mine did. Keep us posted on what corporate says or does for you. I shut mine off after it got to 2500 + and it was showing no signs of slowing down. I gonna give infiniti a call.

It stinks

It honestly stinks, i got my car on saturday. its a great car i love it with prem and nav but the 1 potential LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM seems to kill all the fun out of it. i ve honestly driven more on the loaner than my actual car. all the trips on MY car have been to and from the dealer. the service shop is great and professional but im hoping now being that its the 2nd time i brough it in in less than a week, they wont say we road tested it and found nothing because i will end up getting the BBB CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND state attorney generals office involved, i refuse to drive a car that i reasonably deem unsafe. infiniti corporate threw me around a couple of places and their regional specialist who was workin on my case originally.. was transferred so now im stuck in the mud waiting for them to get back to me.
