break in period

Hey everyone does anyone know what is required during the break in period of my 09 G37xs sedan? Also how many miles do I have to put on the car before it is broken in? Do I have to get an oil change after say 2k miles, I think I saw that post by another member.

That's correct about break-in period. I have done just little over 1000 miles on my new G37 sedan and I have been careful till now. But today, i had to slam my breaks to avoid crossing a signal on red light. The car came to a screeching halt. Everything looks fine, no smell etc. Do i need to get it checked out?

Drive it like you stole it. Seriously. What's the point of a break in period? The engine has already been ran for a couple hundred miles before it was put into the car, and if you're talking "mating" the engine to the transmission, you wanna push the car smoothly throughout the rev range in as many gears possible.

Okay, maybe don't drive it like you stole it, but don't baby it either.

No, you're fine. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but any modern's car break in period is a guideline, not something where you'll ruin the car if you have to accelerate fast to get on a Freeway or slam on the brakes to not run a red light. They are just saying for 1200 miles drive like a complete lunatic, just be sensible. My plan on my G37x Coupe is to do an oil change at 3750, and then 7500 and after that go to a 7500 mile schedule unless my driving habits change enough to need to do it sooner. Doing one at 3750 is just to get rid of the break in oil.

I couldn't agree more. The most critical wear-in parts are the
arguably the piston rings. There is plenty of proof that "seating"
the rings by hard accelleration and decelleration in the first
few miles of engiine use privides superior seating, compression
and engine life.....exactly how they break in racing engines
especially racing motorcycles. Is this method harder or more
likely to result in failure of other non-engine mechanical
componenets???? ..that's debateable, but my experience is
that it works for me and what the heck....its under warranty
so if something else is wrong or breaks, I get it fixed for
free and get the benefits of a better running and wearing
engine. JMO.....I also believe in doing several very short
interval oil changes on a new engine to get the assembly
lube and residual dirt and metal out...can't hurt a thing.

I think the main thing is keeping the RPMs fluctuating, just don't use cruise control 'til you hit 1200 miles and you'll be fine
I change my oil at 1k, then 5k, then every 5k after that. I use Mobil1 5/30 and Mobil 1 Filter and do all the changes myself.
Enjoy your new G!

This is probably THE MOST important part about the break in period. So many people go, "oh hey, I'll break in my period with a drive from LA to Vegas." Bad, bad idea.

As I said, try to reach as many revs through as many gears as possible. Sure, you may not hit 5k in 7th gear, but you want strong, smooth acceleration in every gear. And don't be afraid to engine brake either, just don't redline it every time.

if you are still in the break in period and you have gotten up to 6k rpm once or twice is that bad for the engine? other than the i drive the car under 4krpm.

It's comfortably under redline, I wouldn't worry, just don't lock it at 6k for very long.
