G37S Oil Consumption @ 40k

Hey guys,

I'll make this short and sweet. The car at around 30k ish threw a Service Engine Soon light, brought it in to this one dealership I was local to at the time and they did a check. I was around 3,100 miles from my last change and they found that I was 1 quart down. The tech at this dealership basically told me that it was my fault and that if they had to check for this again and I failed to put the "correct amount" of oil in the car, they'd black flag my account for warranty service. BS I know. At the same time, they also said for it to burn one quart during an interval is normal. Is this true?

Anyway, I changed my oil that weekend. About 2,8000 miles later... SES light again. Took it to another dealership and they cleared the code and told me to watch it. Changed my oil again. 3,200 miles later, SES light yet again.

This process has repeated itself until three weeks ago. The service guy at this dealership wanted to try to fix this issue by using Ester oil. They did the change for free, cleared the SES light, and sent me on my way. Now, not even 1,200 miles later another SES light. I checked my oil and it's BARELY on the stick. I'm at 40,000 miles and my miles are about 75%/25% highway/city.

So to summarize, since about 30,000 miles oil consumption has been getting greater and greater.

Any insight on what's going on? I've read several of the threads on here about oil consumption but none with an outcome... just addressing the issue. How many quarts am I down if it's barely touching the stick? 2? 3?

Let me know and thank you for anything you can provide!

You should have filed lemon law after the 3 SES light. Another member on here kept getting SES lights, even though from another issue, and filed lemon law and infiniti bought back his car.

And is this too late for me to do now?

Just got back from dropping it off at the dealer...

This morning on my way to the dealership the code cleared itself. I'm almost 100% positive it was a misfire code.

Anyway, when I got to the dealership I had the service guy check the oil level and it was indeed about a quart low. The level was between the LOW mark and the NORMAL mark.

He's already started to prepare me to present him with proof of oil changes since I've owned the vehicle... sigh.

What can I expect from this (from people who have had to deal with this before)? Am I doomed to getting a new motor?

Not that it matters, but just out of curiosity...

What kind of break-in did you do with your car? What type of oil have you used?

It shouldn't matter what oil you used or what kind of break-in you did, your car shouldn't be having this problem. Again, I'm just curious.

YEAH!!! THE SAD TRUTH!
I am at about 20k and my G37S 6MT uses about 2qts every 5k miles. I have used only the Nissan ester oil. I ran the oil consumption test and they said it was within the normal ranges of oil usage. Back then I thought I just bumped into another funny mechanic.... From Infinity USA said that an oil consumption problem exist if the car uses more than 1qt / 1,000 miles.

P.S. I know 3 other G37 owners and 2- 370Z, all of them with about the same oil consumption problem. HOWEVER, many folks on this forum DO NOT have any issues.

Yup, my 04.5 G35 and 09 G37 never lost any oil. Lucky me! I'll be keeping a very close eye on the level.

Today I went in for an oil-consumption test...I was about .70 of a quart low per 1000 miles

Infiniti perceived this as normal...but I was just doing this as due diligence. I'm at 17.6K miles and have been consuming oil at this rate since Day-1. As a result I perform all my oil changes at the dealership, from the same Advisor, with the same ester oil.

No SES lights so far but .7 quarts/1000 miles does seem silly for a car with only 5 quarts. Let's see what happens as the engine gathers more miles.

I'm in the same boat with loosing about 1 qt. every 3k. and the Nissan dealership in Santa Barbara, CA. say's that's right on the boarder of a engine oil consumption test. I never had this trouble with my 2004 Honda Accord Couple V6 w/MT6 for the 4 years that I had it. I like the "G" but seriously doubting the quality and the poor service from Nissan Motor Company.
