Review Cobb Race Tune on Dyno
So, I just talked to UpRev to see what their plans are. They will be releasing a beta version for our cars soon; like in the next month. That will only be available in Austin at their shop. The standard and tuner versions are still a ways off (they did not give an estimate).
They seem to think they are some ways off on controlling the cams and associated parameters, and that it will not be one of the things initially available. As mentioned above, it is all new, and it sounds like they are just now getting into it (speculation on my part). He did say that there is a lot to it because of the throttle is controlled by both the intake valve movement (as I discussed above), but under certain conditions the throttlebodies/plate are used to control throttle (I covered this in another thread).
They also feel like the gains will be much smaller than previous versions. Richard (from UpRev) commented that Infiniti did a much better job from the factory. He indicated that this was evidenced by the stock style maps working better on the Cobb in some cases. He basically said they are seeing the same thing. If you are expecting big gains out of the UpRev, I would not hold your breath. I am not opposed to trying both the Cobb and UpRev, so I will keep you posted on what I decide to do.

You can actually change the duration and overlap of the intake cams by making a mechanical adjustment to some set/adjustment screws. On the intake side most changes will come from some combination on VVEL parameter changes, and the adjustment to these screws. Things are more traditional on the exhaust side, although there are a few twists.
as far as cam angles and durantion, Kseries Motors from Honda/Acura have this technology and I have been assembling and tuning the motors for years now. the gains are ridiculous once you find the proper cam angple the induction and exhaust setup likes! wish i could mess with timing but no matter what I did nothing in the logs changed. guess that might just be a software hickup. hope cobb steps their coding game up!
All depends on the dyno. When I had my car dyno'd previously on a mustang dyno I got 307rwhp. I brought it to a different shop(dynapack) as the original shop doesn't do cobb tuning. At GRD, I had 10rwhp gain getting the custom tune. As long as if the numbers keep going up as i do mods to the car, thats all thats important.
is it cobb that is fail or the car itself? As jran76 mentioned above, gains even on the UpRev are not going to be substantial. I agree that the maps cobb included were garbage, but custom tune is where it is at anyway. Besides, who really bought the cobb ap to run generic maps and not get a custom tune? That was my plan all along, but will give it to you that the maps cobb delivered are bad.

Not sure, I've seen more people lose HP and stick with the stock style map which is the most recent map infiniti used on the 08 G's. There is just too much varience with the provided maps by cobb. Agree, I wish custom tunes would wake up the car a bit more, but I knew coming into the custom tuning session that I wasn't going to be heart broken if I didn't get substantial gains. Like I said before, my ultimate goal is going twins, so this is just an interim solution.
I've been meaning to give GRD a call again ever since the Race tuner software became available. I was out there back in march, and they were suggesting I go with Uprev, but Uprev had no applicable product so I picked up the COBB. I agree that the numbers seem a bit low due to the fact there are a few dynos floating around with numbers just shy of yours produced off stock vehicles. How much did they charge you for the tune, and what was your comfort level with their tuning knowledge/capability? I have all the mods you do with the addition of ceramic headers, so its nice to see what numbers you saw for a comparison.
