Motul 8100 Oil

I keep reading about Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w30 in other threads but I can only find Motul X-Cess in 5w40. The only Motul 5w30s I can find is the Motul Eco-Nergy and Motul X-max. Which one should be getting?

Also do you have any recommendation on where to purchase these?

Thanks,
Jason

I'm using 8100 0w40 and it seems to be just fine. 0 is the viscosity when cold, and 40 is when hot. I bought mine from Forged. http://www.forgedperformance.com/

might wanna ask this in the "General Tech" thread since that's where car maintenance stuff is discussed....might get a bigger response. Just an idea! I personally want to know the answer to your exact question too since I've considered Motul 8100.

Can one of the admins move my post to 'General Text'? Maybe I can get some answers there. Thanks!

Except, the journals and passages are sized for a 30 weight oil, not a 40 weight oil. I asked a friend of mine who is a chemical engineer with a major oil company if I could use the 5W-40 synthetic I had been using with my previous car in the G37. His short answer was "no", because the engine is not designed for a 40 weight oil when hot.

Does he think that the 40 weight oil will be too thin to properly lubricate the warm engine? To the point of causing premature wear?

Well I'm a ChE, that worked for many years for Mobil in the lab that developed Mobil 1, and I call BS on that. 1st, 30 and 40 designate a range of viscosities, not an exact viscosity, so it is quite possible for a heavy 30 weight and a thin 40 weight to be almost identical. 2nd, assuming your 40 weight is thicker than your 30 weight, the thicker oil will provide higher film strength and more wear resistance and the expense of higher pumping losses (lower HP and MPG). It's no big deal and you or your engine won't notice the difference. I wouldn't hesitate to use 40 weight, especially if I was tracking my car or driving very aggressively often.
