Starting off in 2nd gear?
Posted this on 6mt. also.
I just traded in my '05 G35 a/t for an '08 G37s 6mt. Jan. 1st. Wow, what a great car. This is not my first stick, and I often drive my g/f Altima mt. My question is about starting off in 2nd gear. Does anyone else do this? Will this harm the transmission? Just seems like first gear is a waste on this car. Of course I don't do this all the time, especially when cars in front of me at stop light. Thanks for your feedback guys.

The first Gear is necessary for this car.
the only time uou can start with the second gear is when the car is already rolling.
Other than that, its a waste of gas, the clutch ,the engine and the transmission .

I start in 2nd gear 95% of the time. I usually lightly rev it up to 1.5krpm and ease out the clutch. I dont see any harm in it since the rpms are low. I only use first gear if I want a quick takeoff. Though I almost always start in 2nd when there ARE cars in front of me at a stop light, since they tend to go slow anyway.
I only start in 2nd gear if the roads are wet, icy, or snow covered. If I have any doubts as to my ability to get good traction, then I stay out of 1st gear at all costs. But when the pavement is dry and the temperatures are high, I always use 1st.

Again, as iterated above by Frank, if you're riding your clutch, it'll wear it out quickly. Only do this on a daily basis if you can get the car moving smoothly without going over 1000RPM or so.
