How long for Service Engine Light to go off?

Hey guys. I just (as of last weekend) got my brand new 08 G37s 6MT. The car has only 180 miles on it (driven once from dealership home)

It has been sitting in my garage and has only been started 2-3 times since it came home.

The other day, when I started it, I got the steady "Service Engine Soon" light.

Looking into the manual, it says this may be caused by exhaust/cat system or loose fuel door cap. I opened and closed the fuel door again to ensure it's tight. Manual also states that the car must be driven for a "few trips" for the light to go away (I'm gonna be out of town and will not be able to test this out for a few weeks).

Is this true? Should I just take it straight to the dealer? I read elsewhere on this site that 50 start/stop cycles also resets the ECU.

no 50 start/stop cycles does not reset the ECU, the only way to reset the ECU is to disconnect the battery for 15+ minutes or do the reset method, which requires several complicated steps that require perfect timing.

when you get back, just drive it around, if it doesn't go away, then take it to the dealer

You don't have to disconnect the battery to reset the ECU. There's a procedure you can perform to reset it. Check the DIY section or something.

I'll give the ECU reset instructions a try. Looks like a good way to spend some free time..

The first time it took me a while to get it. But I think I replied to that thread with my revised version. Using that, I've always been able to get it within 3 tries. Few days ago, resetted it first try.

Just an update, drove it around a few times, didn't go away, then when I started her up the other day, the light went off. I'm assuming it does take a certain number of starts and driving for a specific error code to be purged as new data replaces it.

had the same issue recently.

my mechanic plugged in his reader and it was an EVAP code.
tightened the gas cap and it worked. but the next day it came back!

so then they opened up the engine cover, and noticed that one of the EVAP wires was loose...it wasn't clicked on properly. not sure how to describe it, but once you take the plastic engine cover off, it's right in the middle at the top...a grey connector.

after that was tightened, it's been fine. hope that helps!

The 'Service Engine Soon' light had came on for me again. So I took it to the dealership. They kept the car for two days and were waiting for a call from Infiniti Tech Support to see if there was a solution (apparently one of the cars they were about to sell was doing the same thing, so extra incentive for them right there... )
Anyways, they said they replaced the: Intake Timing Control Solenoid. I'm picking the car up later tonight, I'll let ya'll know if the light comes on again.
EDIT: Oh, and I was told that the faulty solenoid was giving off engine misfire readings, thus the light. This leads me to believe the solenoid was working fine, just giving off incorrect readings.
