Gear Ratios/Shifting
Gear Ratios/Shifting
Hey guys n gals,
I'm just curious at what speed/RPM does everyone shift at for each gear? I'm not used to a 6 gear, so 5th gear and 6th gear seem fairly similar. Also, this question is for cruising speed, not going for 0-60 records. Thanks y'all, just looking for some input.

Generally speaking, always want to shift right up before the fuel cutoff.
It seems like you would want to launch at around 4k rpms, or at least that's what I can recall from the guy who has the documented record stock 1/4 time with an incredible 60 ft time.
Your RPM shift points will vary depending on how much you load the car on the way to that RPM. So it's going to differ from person to person.
For launchning & racing it really depends on what surface you're launching on. Your launch RPM will be much higher on the drag strip vs. public streets. The drag strips have VHT compound on the first 1/8 mile of the track and even more at the staging lines.
If someone has the time, plot out the torque curves and you can calculate the optimal shift points. Sometimes it's not always at redline.

True, but usually with a stock car it's been set for optimal shifts, I guess. Obviously you have to take the torque curves into a lot more consideration if you're able to modify the redline rpm with external software/hardware since you probably will be dropping torque output like a rock after a certain number, depending on the mods and such.
I don't think I was clear enough, I was just talking about cruising speeds. More specifically, let's say I'm cruising in 6th gear, what rpm/speed do you let it drop to before you shift to 5th, 4th, etc?

good luck
