Ok so this may be a really noob question, but does it hurt the differential (VLSD) to kick out the rear end on turns sometimes. Also, what if you were to drift from time to time ( once a month ). Is this going to reduce the lifetime of the differential and other parts dramatically?

 

I can't answer your question specifically but I can say MOST people over on G35Driver were getting there Diff Fluid changed at 15,000 (not sure if that was the manu recommended interval) but if your going to be doing crazy stuff I'd pay attention to that. I think I'd be more worried about my tires than rearend!

 

well the more you work the car the shorter it will last. if you baby it it might last longer but what fun is that. I can't have fun, i rub

Yeah I have an asian friend who gave me a bad conscience about running the car. He's got a 350z. I figure I have a 5 year warranty that covers the big stuff, I might as well have some fun with the car. I think these things are designed very well, so I see no reason it can't handle some driftin or kickin out the rear from time to time. If its just tires I replace, I can handle that

Will the diff. fluid replacement be covered by the standard warranty? How much is that to do if not?

The VLSD is sealed... gotta replace the whole thing, can't change the fluid.

If you boil the fluid in the VLSD too much, it will not resist shear anymore and thus your diff will default to a normal "open" differential. So, it fails but it fails gracefully.

I'm guessing it's fine to have fun with the car now and then but if you spend a whole day drifting at the track I would expect to come home with an open diff.

 

Thats a pretty bleak outlook sheesh! Although I imagine if you drifted 8 hours straight with almost no breaks aside from changing tires, you would be right. I would hope that drifting 1 time a day, 3 days a week however, would not have the same effect ( not that I drift that often, its very rare I do ).

It shouldn't hurt if you do it once in a while, since that what the LSD is mainly for. The LSD helps the tires to keep spinning when the car is sliding so you still have control when you're sliding.
