I've read the "breaking in question thread" but found something recently and was wondering what you guys think:

This guy basically explains why it makes more sense to break in the car by NOT babying the RPMs. He also emphasizes the slim window of properly breaking it in. If that's true, does the 1000mi-1200mi break in rule still apply?

Everyone has their own ways of breaking in a motor. When I built my last motor in an Eclipse, my engine builder (who had been building engines for about 30 years) said just drive it how you want.. he said it would be better to be more agressive with it than to baby it.
You certainly aren't going to do any damage to your car by running the car how you want to in the first 1000 miles.

i find myself driving it pretty soft the first few hundred miles (mayb 300-500), not shifting over 3.5-4k rpm...but after that i've shifted it around 4-4.5 rpm (not all the time tho). So i basically drive it like i normally would drive it. I just havent really gunned it yet

My mechanic says they race the hell out of the engines at the factory on a bench for quite a while, so no need to worry. I let my idiot friend drive mine with only 400 miles on it (with me at shotgun) and he jumped all over it before I could slug him. It's actually running stronger now that I've got about 900 miles on it, or maybe that's just my imagination.
to baby or not
I was told by the salesman (who is a good friend as well) that it's best to not ride at one speed (especially high ones) or at consistent rpms for the first 500 miles, but that alternating speeds including jumping on it, running through the gears hard, etc. isn't going to hurt. Logic though would seem to say take it easy for the first 500 miles or so. Doesn't take long to put that much on it, as you probably already know. I put 150 on it the first day because it was so damned fun.
The way i look at it, if you can stand to wait, better safe than sorry. it's like taking a sneakers bar out of the freezer and not waiting for it to unthaw. Sure you can eat it, it'll be good, but if you wait, you KNOW you won't chip your fronts

The way i look at it, if you can stand to wait, better safe than sorry. it's like taking a sneakers bar out of the freezer and not waiting for it to unthaw. Sure you can eat it, it'll be good, but if you wait, you KNOW you won't chip your fronts

I picked mine up on a Friday afternoon. Drove across Houston to diner the second day (150 miles). I made my schedule so that I took a 950 mile round trip for work the first week (my region is most of Texas). By the end of my first week break in was complete. 1100 miles of reasonable driving shouldnt kill anyone. it does help you to have better gas mileage down the road in my experience. I am usually getting about 23+ MPG or so in mostly highway driving, and about 19+ in city driving.
