I think its "deep sh*t", like when you've entered a turn too fast.

DS mode is Drive Sport mode. Basically it shifts closer to the redline for more aggressive driving.

Hmm...so if you put that shifter over to the manual shift mode, it displays DS. If you don't actually shift manually, the car is still in automatic but in this "Drive Sport" mode?

And then when you either tap the shifter up or down or one of the paddles you switch to manual mode

But I read in the owner's manual that it has less fuel efficiency and is intended for "hilly" driving conditions (prob. for shorter shift throws).

My opinion, I LIKE IT!

Well it's so you can stay in a higher powerband to help your car get up that hill. But come on now, we're not driving a 80hp civic here... The G has *****... like a G

In addition to what others have said here, DS mode is most effective on the corners. When u brake hard and then enter a turn, it will downshift a gear or two for you, and HOLD that gear throughout the entire corner and then some.

It's so much fun on sweeping highway off and on ramps.

It downshifts for you a whole lot more, so its an agressive automatic.
As soon as u shift the gear urself, then it gives all controll over to you for the duration... untill u bump it back over to D.

Any of you tried using the paddles while *not* in DS mode? Every time I try it, the car shifts and goes into manual shift mode even though I'm not in DS. Kinda thought you had to be in DS to use the paddles, but apparently not.

I'm sorry, but your post is a little confusing. DS, as described earlier, is Drive Sport... a sporty automatic mode.

Once you're in DS mode, if you tap the paddles, it goes to manual mode. You're no longer in DS. You'll have to go to D and then back to DS for sporty automatic shifting w/out paddles.

Then, there's the other alternative.... when you're in regular D, and you tap the shift paddles. The car will momentarily downshift/upshift for you, as you tell it... but i'm not quite sure for how long. I know after a few seconds, the D displays back onto the screen... can anyone confirm if at that point the computer takes over the shifting again?

You can use your paddles in regular D mode, however it won't stay in that gear permanently. For example if you are in D and downshift into 4th, it will stay there temporarily but then go back to 5th automatically. Basically, it's not full manual mode, but it's great for things like passing quickly.
