VVEL in action

http://www.nissan.co.jp/SKYLINE/COUP...VEL/index.html

I don't know if this is a repost but thought this flash movie of VVEL illustration was interesting even if you can't read Japanese.

My understanding is that the throttle body valve/plate is not needed with this new system. So what does the throttle body actually do?

My guess would be the throttle body valve is used for coarse adjustment while the cylinder valve is used for fine adjustment.

Just a guess.

I wonder if VVEL technology will be incorporated into the G35 sedan in the near future or if Infiniti will wait until the next redesign.

I fail to see the validity in this statement. Infiniti basically cribbed BMWs design here only they made it lighter, less complicated and capable of sustaining slightly more revs. No doubt VVEL is one step ahead of Valvetronic, but BMW set the template. Give credit where credit is due.

As for the throttle body, like BMW I'm guessing it's also there in case the VVEL system fails and will enable the vehicle to enter into a "limp home mode." Like others have said, it's also there for smog purposes to reduce emissions on start up.

This engine requires TB's, and its not something just for emissions purposes.

Hope that helps.
I'll trust this since he actually takes these things apart and tunes them...

I believe this video was meant to be for training purposes or a sales pitch to the people who decide the "go ahead" before the system was ever finished. The valve bodies throttle the airflow for this engine, not the intake valves.
