Yup 100%. You will need a tune. I will be upgrading to SOHO's 69mm intake kit soon which requires a re-tune.
I like the creativity though. Stock airboxes are being removed right? I see it still in the picture so I was a bit confused.
I am a bit of a trickster!! Before I do the whole 2.7" MAF housing change I am making 3 in intakes that run from the grill to the stock air boxes like long runner intakes do. Pipe them into the stock air boxes with a removed filter. The stock meter will still read the air coming from my setup. I will also replace the stock rubber intake tubes with the Mishimoto Silicone tubes connected to the stock air boxes. I am hoping it will act like a full long tube intake setup without having a full tune right now. For much less than buying Z1 or Stillen long tube intakes. Right now I have less than $250 in the whole setup. Just hope it works . here are some pics on how it will be installed.
Stock filters removed
Stock Modified air box
Mounting point for 3 in tubing
Inside modified airbox
Filter and Tubing installed
Underhood view of 3" Intake tubes installed
Finished install with completely stock look! No sign of modification at all. Mishimoto silicone tubes will be installed on finished product.
Very interesting. I’d want to see your results on a dyno if you ever got around to it. I suspect the factory air boxes, relative to straight piping, will cause a lot resonance and lead to some real weird peaks and valley.

I was thinking the same, I would think the pipe would need to be connected inside the airbox.

I am hoping my homemade tubes will act like a ram air to get more air to the factory air boxes. Not sure but I and just trying something.
I did this last year with a different setup. I used 4 inch pipes to feed the stock airboxes but kept the OE filters in place to later upgrade to aftermarket.
This was one of my favorite mods. Butt dynos and kill stories confirm it works. I cut the ends of my grill out to provide a straighter flow.
Yeah I'm familiar with the factory setup. Again, still need to be tuned more than likely to get the best gains and running correctly.
I ended up getting mine's flashed and responded amazingly to a base map that had intakes. I'll be paying attention to this thread since I want the look of full tubular intakes if they prove themselves as I've pulled on cars with intakes.

The factory setup has a smaller plastic tube that runs to the air box. I am just changing that to 3" tubes like the long intakes have. Hope it works.
Irrespective of the diameter change impacting the MAF sensor, I'm sure your custom long tube will work. The question is does it matter? Seems the only thing new you're introducing is the pop-charger filter instead of the panel filter. That, and a new chamber of empty space where the OEM filter goes.
I suspect the only real difference you'll observe is sound. Nothing wrong with that.
