DIY: Non-Sport Front Disc Brakes Replacement

Gotta say, the Nissan engineers did a great job designing the front brake system. After spending 1.5 hours trying to figure it out (without the FSM), I can now do the front brakes in 15 minutes per side. Very easy. If you can change your oil, you can do your front non-Sport brakes. Note the red anti-sway-bar is an Eibach.

Difficulty:
  • On a scale of 1-5 (5 = hardest), this is a 2.5 for the 1st side.
  • It then becomes a "2" on the other side

Here's the tools you need: (thats it!)
  1. #7 Allen Head socket wrench
  2. Brake Spreader tool

FSM Exploded Diagram of the Front Disk Brake system:

Steps:
  1. After taking off the wheel, locate the "Protector cap - #2" and remove it (lower inside of caliper)
  2. Use the #7 Allen Head wrench to remove the "Location Pin - #4"

  3. Once the "location pin" is removed, swing the "Cylinder Body - #1" ALL the way up and secure it with a bungee or equivalent

  4. Remove the two "Pad Return Springs - #7". Just pull them straight out.

  5. Remove the Inner-Pad and Outer-Pad
  6. Compress the piston using a "brake spreader tool"

  7. Once the piston is spread fully inwards, grease the pads on the edges and backing. See diagram for lube points.
  8. Clean the "Pad Retainers - #6" with brake cleaner and remove any brake dust. The pad retainers are the copper-looking pieces that the pads fit into.
  9. Lube the brake Pad-retainer - #6 as well.
  10. Insert the inner and outer pads. NOTE: They are kind of fiddly but sometimes you need to pry open the pad-retainer to get the pads in. ALSO the FSM mentions the pads are uni-directional. One or more of the pads may have a directional arrow. SPECIAL NOTE: The brake wear-indicator should be on the BACK of the rotor

  11. Now insert the Pad return springs - #7 on the top and the bottom holes. Takes a little to align them, but you'll get the hang of it. I also lubed the ends of these
  12. Take the Cylinder body - #1 and swing it back into place

  13. Exhale - thats it! Makes you wonder how the dealerships can charge $250+ for a front brake job.

Hope this helps those with a non-Sport G37 coupe/sedan.

I don’t off hand but I do know I used the akebono pads for both front and rear. The Infiniti shops or even rock auto will have them listed. Also try concept Z for them. IIRC, they were less than $65 for front pads

The rubber piece is inconsequential to replacing the pads. Either just pull the bolt out HARDER or pull the rubber piece off (will require install later).

Just yank on it and the bolt will come all the way out. Use PB Blaster to soften it plus the bolt and it will provide some lube to it.

Report back on results (and pull HARDER ;-))

Excellent DIY write-up!

I thought I would be able to utilize your guide, but, after a little digging, I discovered that the G37 sedan's non-sport front brakes are 2-piston whereas the coupe's non-sport front brakes are 1-piston. (I would have expected the opposite to be true!) For those who might need it, here is the FSM diagram from the non-sport front brakes for the sedan:

The torque values shown are as follows: 26.5 N.m.; 20 ft. lbs.
