Where is the DIY: Oil Change ?

I am buying a used 2008 G Sport M/T, and will probably change my oil most of the time, I am sure it is easy , but where is the DIY just so I can become familiar with the car? I searched, and searched, and only found changing trans fluid

If you a need a DYI for an oil change, you shouldn't be changing it yourself.

The oil change is identical to the trans change as far as set up/prep goes. You need to drop the front plastic cover (10 or 12 10mm bolts). The rest should be self explanatory.

Others may disagree, but I think the car should be level when draining/refilling. That is, not have one end lifted but other not. Don't double gasket and don't overfill.

How's that for a DYI

Edit: If you're seriously looking for one, try on the 370z site. I think there' s a more indepth dyi than above.. The process is very similar to the G.

I don't think there is one because it's extremely simple. I'd be happy to but I don't have the standard plastic splash guard on the bottom of my engine so the pictures and instructions would throw off the noobs who need an oil change DIY because theirs will look significantly different. Maybe someone else will make one soon.

I disagree. Everyone's automotive maintenance, modification, and repair skill set starts somewhere and IMO there's no shame in wanting to have a guide to be sure you're doing it right the first time.

In fact, even though we are both competent working on our cars, I disagree with your assessment. I think anyone who takes all those damn bolts out to drop the entire plastic engine splash guard is a noob. I only remove the 4 at the rear and fold it down along the crease to access the oil pain just like dealerships and service centers do. I seldom ever change the drain bolt crush washer because in my 23 years of owning Nissan/Infiniti vehicles I have never had one leak a single drop of oil from the drain bolt without changing it. I park on a slight incline (lower in the rear) in my driveway and I find that this allows the oil to drain more completely than with the car perfectly level (I've tried and measured it both ways) I don't use a filter wrench because my hands are large and strong enough to take the filter off without one and I know that tightening it more than I can do by hand is too tight. So maybe it ain't so simple for someone who's never done it?

BB,

I think anyone that doesn't drop the cover is a noob. Here's why. Sure you can just change the oil, but I also take this opportunity to inspect (as much as can be) the back side of the engine for any leaks (oil, coolant) or anything that looks unusual. You can't do that with the cover in place. I do my oil changes 2x a year, so pulling the cover isn't really that big of a deal. If the car is supported by jackstands, this is also a good time to check the front end for any play or looseness.

As for the car position, if you consider the location of the drain hole, actually having the car tilted to the passenger side would get the most out.

For a first timer, it's probably best to do it under the supervision of someone who knows what they're doing. While it really is simple, it's also very simple to screw up with catastrophic results.

If the 2 oil changes a year are the only time you are under the car to inspect things it might indeed be a good time to drop it and look around. I'm under my car a whole lot more than that for lots of things other than oil changes so I didn't think about that aspect.

Thanks J Solo & Black Betty, I appreciate the info. I have changed the oil on my hondas many times, but I just wanted some info like you helped me with like 10mm bolts or 12mm, and the size of the oil plug (17mm?) . Which bolts to remove, and go ahead Black Betty and post a simple DIY oil change. I know it is easy, but it is helpful as I never owned the G before and I just want to know about these bolts and cover we may have to remove. Thanks again, J solo, I will look at the change guide for the 370Z, but I wanted one here , simple as it may be, to look at.

I went and looked at the 370Z DIY for Oil Change. Very good, and clear with pictures, Thank you J Solo! Just need one here Black Betty - post a DIY oil change or you post it J Solo with pics.

It seems easy, but all those bolts and clips that need to be removed!! I would rather just leave the underbody cover off for good!

What size is the oil drain plug? 17mm? I still want a DIY for basic things Black Betty. I know it is easy , but knowing what size to bring out helps.

Drain plug uses 14mm wrench or socket.

I never responded with a DIY because the one in the link is very thorough and detailed with photos that I don't have. The procedure is the same on a G as it is on the Z, no difference. The bolts on the shield are 10 mm and the drain plug is 14 mm. I remove and replace the filter by hand, I don't use a wrench.

Just curious do you follow the factory service recommended interval even with synthetic oil? I just switched to M1 and they should be good past the 3750miles with dealership factory oil change.
