COILOVERS INSTALL on an X

Hi Guys,
Got my coilovers last week and installed them myself.
Here's a quick DIY to help you guys with the AWD since most people think of it as a PITA..
If you arent using an impact gun, lube up those bolts before hand
We will start with the rear
1) Jack your car up. (I had a lift in my shop, so my entire car was off the ground)
Here's how the rear coils and strut looks

2) Remove your rear wheel

3) Alright so looking at the photo.. your gonna remove the Spring Perch, it should be alittle difficult without a impact gun.
the spring should then be accessible. Remove the entire rear spring, and rubbers.
4) Then remove the Strut bolt on the bottom.
Then Top bolts.

Remove the strut and replace top Gaskit to new strut...
5) Reinstall Strut (top portion first) With strut gasket from your car (should be a white piece)
6) Install rear coil spings with stock rubbers for the bottom of the spring, and top portion where the adjustable piece goes) (see finished picture)
7) Your going to have to either lower your car or like I did get another jack and jack up the spring perch to install back the rear bolt. Tight the bottom strut bolt as well.
it should look like this

Then complete other rear...
I started with the rears cause it was really easy took about 20 minutes..

Then move to the Front..
1) Pop the hood, and you can remove the Strut bolts in the engine bay 3 bolts each strut...

2) Remove front wheel

3) Remove brake line bolts and move away from your struts
4) Remove the Bolt between the Strut bottom and the Fork looking portion of the strut ( it splits the front struts into two portions)
5) Remove bolt on the lower fork of the Strut and the lower control arm
6 Remove A Arm (around your strut)
7) Heres the hard part, Force down on your lower control arm by pushing on you front rotor (IMPORTANT****Be careful not to push down too hard and tear/rip your front axle boot****) and your front strut should be able to come toward you and out...

This is how your stock one should look compared to your new coils
Reverse steps to install coils
Make sure everything is tighten move to the next side.
Once completed check out your drop, if you need to make any adjustments refer to the manual.
I didnt make any adjustments on mine, just the front Dampering which was on top the front struts...

The proper way to set preload
-Loosen both lock rings under the spring (spring seat ring (top) and spring lock ring (bottom)) so that the spring is loose and can move up and down slightly.
-Tighten up the spring seat ring so that the spring is snug, but do not tighten it down past simply holding the spring snug, this will be "0" preload.
-Now bring the bottom lock ring up so that it is just touching the spring seat ring, but do not tighten to lock, you will be moving the spring seat ring next.
-Now tighten up the spring seat ring so that you are now preloading (compressing) the spring.
-Measure the distance between the bottom ring and the top ring as you are tightening, once there is a 5mm gap between the two rings, you have 5mm of preload on the spring.
-Tighten up the lock ring to lock your preload in place
-Repeat for all 4 corners.

Please click the following link to see a video of how to properly adjust preload on a true coilover set up:

The proper way to set preload on Independent Rears
- Loosen the lower lock ring
- Remove the lower mount bolt from the vehicle
- Using a spare jack under the spring bucket raise it so there is no compression on the
spring but so that the spring sits snug (this is zero preload)
- Raise the jack approx. 8 mm to create preload on the spring (some vehicle require more
preload, however excess preload can alter vehicle ride quality)
- Move the lower mount up or down by holding the lower mount and turning the cartridge
- Adjust the mounting point on the lower mount so that its aligned with the vehicle
mounting point
- Once aligned reinstall the lower mount bolt and tighten

On independent rears: Adjusting the pre-load would be the struts, and adjusting the height would be the springs (in the spring bucket)

Enjoy Guys

Thanks for this. With this it makes the process look simple although the part I was dreading is adjusting the ride height.
